I have had this pack for 4 yrs and have packed out 3 blacktails and a bear hide and the frame never bent . I was just wondering how the frame was bending ? The mainbeam xl has been the best hunting pack I have ever owned . Cant wait to try out hornhunters new curl pack.

I also love my brand new Swarovski binocs…a splurge but I will never be sorry! I got the winged eye cups from Ace Photo Digital, (Angled eyecup (f/10X42 WB EL) but I can’t fit them into binocs. I removed the regular eyecup, but can’t screw in the winged. Am I doing something wrong? Are they maybe the wrong size? Any advice would be appreciated!

I checked on this, and it seems that some people are having problems with those cups, getting them on. They should work though. You may want to return them or go to a shop for installation. Hope that helps???

Are you looking for the best glass out there? The Swarovski 10X42 SLC is the answer. I’ve owned a pair for 5 years now. I bought them 2 years used from my cousin. That was one of the best investments I have made towards my collection of outdoor gear.
I have been very satisfied with how well they have held up towards my abuse, at least until the end of the fall season last year. They seemed to not focus as crisp and the right glass had just a hint of blur in the middle that I couldn’t get to go away. Naturally, I assumed it was from the beating these bino’s have taken through the last 5 years.
I called Swarovski and explained what was going on and they told me to send them in and they will see if they can fix the problem. Of course I was expecting a bill when they were through. About 4 weeks later I receive a package with my bino’s in it. The invoice said it was covered under warranty. What a great company to warranty an item that was not a factory defect and especially after almost 7 years. They fixed the blur problem and did an internal and external cleaning and polish the lenses. I have never seen the glass so crisp and clean in a very long time.
Although the retail price at 2000 dollars is a little steep, if you are patient and watch for sales online or check out certified Swarovski dealers on Ebay, you will find a good deal for these. You will not regret the purchase and you will never have to buy another set of binoculars again.

I’ve been using one for about a year now and have found it to be a great headlamp. I use it for work (it was a tax write-off ), as well as hiking, backpacking, hunting and camping so it sees a lot of use.
No doubt there are less expensive headlamps out there that offer great performance.
However, out of the half dozen or so headlamps I own this one has become favorite. Here’s a few reasons why:
1. The angle and light density on the beam is perfect for hiking. Every time I have to go back and use one of my other lamps, this is the first thing I notice, and miss.
2. Simple and easy to use interface. Big knob on the side turns it on and adjusts brightness. Can be used with gloves.
3. Love the 100 lumens! Most of the time I use at 50% or less, but when I need to light up the darkness it has some serious output.
4. Uses 123 batteries. I know some people don’t like these types of cells, but I have found them to be reliable and efficient. Just make sure you don’t buy them at REI or Walgreens, they are way too expensive in those types of stores. Order them off the internet in bulk and save anywhere from 50-75%. I also like their cold weather performance and long storage life.
5. Built to last – it’s a Surefire.
6. Made in USA.

Packing in gear for a big game hunt weight is a primary factor, durability and reliability should be expected. Having multiple sizes of bags is a major bonus, the Carnivore is perfect for packing out high country mulies and keeping the weight down. In Alaska where the moose must be quarter, not boned the moose sized bags will cover the entire quarters. The big game bags are a must have for any serious hunter.

The review of the Caribou Gear game bags is spot on in my eyes. I felt that it was a solid objective review of all the practical applications of the Caribou Gear product line that can be assosciated not only with the Carnivore system, but the entire line of the Caribou Gear game meat retrieval system. I am proud to say that I utilize these game bags as a guide in western Washington when I am packing out meat from remote, back country locations. The game bags not only haul the mail when it comes to Roosevelt Elk and Columbia Black-tail Deer, but also in my home state of Pennsylvania where I use the bags to save steps in processing White-tail Deer, Eastern Wild Turkey, and all my edible game fishes. I have used this pack on a few trips now and i love it. It has a lot of padding and is very comfortable on the long hikes that I have been on. It holds my spotting scope and tripod very well and love the side pocket were the scope fits in. I put my bow on the back of the pack and carried that around with me and the straps hold it in place very well. I’ve tried a lot of packs out and most don’t fit me because i am pretty skinny but this one fits perfectly. Great pack for backpacking in the high country for a few days.

I bought a pair of these boots and they leaked after 1 week hunting. I tried to return them or get them repaired with no luck from Kenetrek. I’ve owned other hunting boots from Cabelas and Danner over the years that did not leak like this. These boots had a poor or defective membrane or liner and Kenetrek did not warranty them. I would not recommend buying the Kenetrek Mountain Extremes. Sam Mazzeo.

I love my Danner Pronghorns. I have had mine for 4 years now and they are still going strong. Very Comfortable and easy to get alone with. In each of those 4 years I would say a walked at least 75 miles in them. There is one think I can’t stress enough about with these type of boots and that is to treat the leather like you would your own skin. What I mean by this is to condition them as needed like you would if your skin on your hands was starting to crack.

I bought my first pair of pronghorn boots December 2013, I have worn these boots everyday and they are one of the best boots Ive ever owned period. I Spent 4 months hiking 5 to 10 miles aday in our mountains, thru water everyday, down paved roads, side walks and the only rest they got came from the 22k miles they traveled on my harley as my motorcycle boots! I ordered two more pair today! Plus these still have 6 months of life left not bad to hold up to my daily abuse year round. I payed $123.00 total last year and for that price there’s no other boot that comes close to this kind of performance!

Have a pair of the Hard Scrabble and a pair of the Mountain Extremes insulated. Both are great boots. Have had Scrabble for two seasons and Extremes for one season. Started to see some separation on the toe guard of the Extremes w/i 3 months. Put some shoe goo on them and seems to be holding.
No leaks to date.
Have had a 4 pairs of the Mendel Canada boot by Cabelas. They are more comfortable but not as supportive as the Kenetreks.
The scrabble did not provide enough support for heavy pack loads-70+/- lbs in steep terrain. The Extremes on the other hand are really nice. Particularly side and downhill. Ankle twisting is not an issue. Soles seem to be holding up well so far.
Do have one hot spot on the R heel but may be due to the insoles I replaced.
Good boots but pricey. Would buy them again.

Uninsulated would go down to about 35 with some snow. If you are wearing a good wool sock. The insulated will be comfy down another 20 degrees at least.
The Crispi hunter would be comparable to the extreme insulated. Hope that helps.

Hi!
I was just trying out those boots in the story (I live in Norway) and they seemed to be super comfortable.
My question is:how waterproof they are?I mostly hike in Norway and forests in here are wet and soggy.I very often go in 3-4 inches deep water etc.
My impression after trying them on were exactly as You described above but I would like to know more details about waterproofness-if You have them of course 😉
I am hesitating between those and Meindl Dovre GTX Extreme.
Both are about the same comfortable but Crispi have softer sole which I prefer…on the other hand I know that Meindl=good quality and I don’t know much about Crispi beside they fact that they are made in Italy.They are popular here in Norway but actually You are the first person who tested that exact model that interest me and I would love to hear more about them.
Anyway I will appreciate any more info and addictional thoughts that You have/had on those boots.

Crispi does a very good job of adhering Gore Tex to the boot. This is critical. If the boot does not have a good bond, you will get constant flex in the gore Tex and it will eventually wear out…so if you keep the moisture ankle bone deep or shallower it should not leak. Take good care of the boot after getting wet, dry well, and treat with the product Crispi recommends.
I would think in the conditions you described, you could get that boot to function well for 2-3 years.

The Editor is right on with that response. Crispi actually utilizes three different types of Gore, and regarding walking through 2-3 inches of water, you will be just fine. A good idea is to use their imperwass (or something similiar) on the leather before venturing out in these ultra wet conditions, just for longevity purposes – (all leather boots should have this done).
My testimonial:
I recently went on a hunting trip with my uncle and his buddies. Three weeks before I left, I ran into Joshua (he does sales or promotional work for Crisipi) at a seminar and he totally sold me on the Hunter and the Wild after trying them on and going through the features. Both my uncle and I bought a pair of Crispi Hunters before we left because the area we were hunting in was going to be very marshy, and I had never put a hunting boot on out of the box that was so darn comfortable.
My uncle is a little thrifty, but he finally broke down and bought a pair, even though it was quite a bit more than he was used to spending on boots. Long story short – He and I were the only two out of 9 that didn’t have wet feet the whole 5 day trip!
Now, and this is no exaggeration, all 9 of us have the same boot, like some Crispi sponsored Hunting team or something. The only bad thing I can say about Crispi is that now I cannot go back to low end $200 hunting boots, but over the years I have realized with outerwear and boots – if you buy a quality product you will have a quality experience. I don’t spend money on many luxuries, but hunting is my favorite past time, so spending a little more on something that actually works is an easy decision.

I would go with the bow that has local knowledge and service. You will be in need of a tune up within 1-2 hundred shots.
Outside of that factor, I would go with the Hoyt. While solving CAM LEAN is intriguing to me, I cannot see how you can get more accurate than the Hoyt.
GREAT BOW!!!
This was not a hit for me. The neck yoke rubbed all the time no mater how I tried to adjust them. I finally cut the yoke off, attached my old bino harness and used the cover and waste strap, for the remainder of the hunting year. This has been the most comfortable for me. I used the S4 system while spot and stalk antelope hunting for 5 or 6 days before I had to go back to my old harness. Good concept, but I think it would work better with a harness than the yoke.
So if i understand the review correctly, 2 guys with 2200 packs stripped of gear were able to pack out all of the elk meat in one trip?
I am in the market for a pack and trying to decide between the 2200, 2800, and 4500. We do 3 days out and then return to base camp to replinish. Thanks.

We did not haul the meat out in 1 load with 2 2200 packs.
We had 4 of us, only 2 guys had the 2200.
With a 2200 you can easily haul the rear quarter of an elk. The 4500 or the 2800 will not haul more meat, they just all become uncomfortable with more weight.
Personally, I think the 2200 is the best Badlands pack. It is set up to haul out meat.
We used one on a Desert Sheep hunt, we packed enough for a 5 day pack in hunt with it.

As you most likely realize, the actual shooting speed will change with each person shooting the bow. The actual speed as they tested it may verry well be 323. If you are going to review something, how about keeping to what you actually tested. This will give more credibility.

Many factors weigh into a bows speed: Arrow Weight, Draw Length, just to name a couple.

I am not the hiker, but I do walk and ride a bicycle a bit. I have had problems with my feet being cold and or sweaty. I walked a bout 2.5 mile during lunch today mostly uphill and it is about 38 degrees outside. My feet did not get cold and did not get sweaty with these socks. They did give good cushion and I am thrilled with them. I’m going to get myself a few more of these Omni wool socks.

Both are outstanding boots!
The Crispi fits me a little better due to the larger toe box.
Both will last you many years, and perform well.
I would call it a draw and get one that you can get the best deal on.
I can get you 20 % off on Crispi if you go that route.
The Crispi comes with a slightly better insole.

The ox is far more comfortable than any other pack I have used to date. I have used the Cabelas Alaskan Guide exclusivly for my past elk hunts. On my last hunt a weld on the frame broke and I decided to try the ox. Although the price tag is high its more than worth the money just for the comfort of the pack and with the badlands unconditional guarantee I know its the last pack I will ever need. I did find it made hauling a large load much easier on my body.

Got one in 1976. Used it while backpacking, worked great for all my cutting tasks. Gave it to my son a few years ago, got it back recently because he wasn’t using it. He lost the lanyard and belt loop portion of the sheath, but otherwise the knife is still in good shape. I really enjoy using this classic knife!

I want to thank you for the information on this site. I researched boots for a long time before finally committing on the Crispi Hunter boots because of the reviews found here. I had my search down to Kenetrek, Lathrop and sons, and Crispi. I tried the Kenetrek on at a hunting show and they felt pretty comfortable but felt way too stiff for my taste. Lathrop and sons won’t let you try their boots off carpet if you want to return them. I received these in the mail and instantly was pleased by the quality workmanship and lightness. They felt almost as comfortable as my Danner Pronghorns, no kidding.
I was excited to take these out on a field test. I live in Western Colorado which is very rocky, high desert, and very steep. Day 1, found us doing some pretty mild trail hiking on sandstone washes and rocky ledges. They felt slightly stiff at first and being the tallest boot I have ever owned took a couple miles to get use to the feel. Towards the end of the 5 mile loop. I was climbing up anything I could find, side hilling, and trying to find a weakness. However, I was only becoming frustrated at how well they preformed out of the box.
The next test needed to push them to a much higher level. We have a Mtn just outside of town called Mt Garfield. It’s 2 miles straight up 2,000 vertical feet of clay dirt, scrambling up rocks, and side hilling shale. The temps have been unseasonably high here this time of year. We hit the trail at 10 am, temp started at 55 degrees and reached 64 by noon, with a slight wind. It took under an hour to reach the summit. These boots ate up the trail and felt like heaven on the feet. They gripped like a goats hoof. My feet normally run a little hot but felt great all day. I didn’t even want to take them off and put by car sandals on after the hike. I have also taken these on several more trips off trail up the bookcliffs. Most of this terrain is very similar to shale fields found above tree line. They cut into the hill side with a ton of bite and equal amount of ankle support. These boots will take you anywhere you are breve enough to go.
I wear Cabelas ingenues medium weight hiking socks and upgraded the insoles to the Mendle perfect hiker insoles. I would highly recommend upgrading to a higher quality insole with cork. The socks are also wonderful with a built in liner sock and x-static.
I marked down these boots on value because if you don’t find them on sale they are super expensive. I also marked them down on durability because I believe the Kenetreks would probably outlast these. These, however, are the most comfortable out of the box boots I have ever owned. If you are on the market for this style of boot. Buy these and don’t look back.

I have the Big Buddy heater and have used it for 3 years. I have used it in tents, pop-up campers, and the garage to good effects. The wind can obviously take the heat out fo the tent, but it keeps things comfortable on low even when in the 20s outside. When I crawl out of the sleeping bag, I kick it up to high (both burners) and it gets toasty, probably hot enough to melt nylon if it touched the guard. The tip-over safety works as advertised. Some excursions have been to elevations above 9000ft and after getting it lit, it works well. Getting it lit can be a challenge up high, but if the igniter is glowing it works. I’d recommend you bring an alternate ignition source of that reason. The big buddy takes 2 LP bottles, or you can only operate it on low (single burner). High burns 2 bottles in a few hours. Low burns one bottle in about 8 hrs.

I love this pack! I have taken it on several multi-day backpacking trips and day hikes. I take it almost everywhere because of it’s versatility and comfort. I really like the fact I can throw my rifle in the scabbard and be hands free. If you have never had a pack with this feature. I believe you’ll be converted after your first trip. Tip for bipod users: look at the Stoney Point Rapid pivot line up. These bipods quickly attach and detach which will make it much easier getting your gun in/out of the scabbard. Also note that you cannot sit down while your rifle is in the scabbard.
I used this pack last year on a 6 day high country mule deer hunt in Colorado. It preformed flawlessly hauling 60 pounds of gear 14 miles in. I used the “spike camp” duffle for my camp gear on the hike out, while filling the mesh area with an entire boned out deer and its cape. Even though the pack was over 110 pounds it was fairly comfortable.
The J34 is by far my favorite backpack. The fact you can unzip one zipper and load this bad boy up with pelts, sheds, or a huge load of meat is awesome. If you don’t get lucky, it rides nice and tight like a day pack. If you like multifunctional equipment as much as me. You’ll love this backpack.

I have had a pair for 5-6 years, they have packed out many heavy loads, but they are starting to hurt my feet. They press up hard on the ball of my foot. Have tried many insoles with no luck. They are a tough, very supportive boot, I hate to give them up.

I have the 2200 and the 4500. I tend to overload my 2200 I stuff it full till the seams look like they are going to pop. My 2200 is one of the first they made. I believe it is a little tougher than the newer models. Have had very good service form Badlands. I like my 2200 for day trips, but if I’m going longer I take my 4500. Make sure you get the right belt size, a lot of people don’t know they come in different sizes. My waist is 31 and I need a medium, can’t get a large tightened up enough.

I really like mine. Tough pack, very comfortable with heavy loads. I packed a front and rear quarter of an elk for 10 hours. I was in sorry shape when I got out, but I don’t think I could have done it without this pack.

I would NOT recommend adding the butt bucket and attaching a bow. you are correct the angle of this would cause the bow to canter our really weird.

Great review! I have the nomad and it works alright up to 30x. After that it’s just to fuzzy to be of any use. I found a deal on this spotting scope and picked it up for my dad. Wow, incredible clarity even at the 60x power. I’m afraid my dad will have to wait, until I can find another deal.
also try the Mr. Heater Little buddy. its a smaller version of this with all the great featurs of the big one. its about $20 cheaper and heats less but is nice if your trying to fit 4 people in an ince fishing tent or if you have to spen a cold night in a small area like your car. A choice product to have around on a cold night.

Purchased the Crispi Idaho GTX boots right before I left for a hunt in Wyoming this year. I received the boots 3 days before my trip. I tried them on, that was it! I took a huge gamble by bringing them on a rugged packing trip. I just want to say, THESE ARE THE REAL DEAL!! Put these on at the trail head and hiked in about 5.5 miles up steep and rugged terrain and set up camp. I put on 2 pairs of Merino wool socks just to be safe. I am an avid hunter and hiker, I hiked about 5-6 miles a day and had zero problems. My feet were very comfortable and the support is amazing. These boots are also very light for a hunting boot. These are by far the best pair of boots i have ever purchased!! Do yourself a favor, by them. FYI, my hunting buddies had equally priced boots (not saying brand), and got blisters on there heels.

Got this pack to elk hunt this fall. So far just hiking on trails, preping for the hunt this pack is awesome. The multifunction of having a day pack or full blown spike camp pack is very appealing to me. The pack is layed out very well with many pockets and organizes extremely well. If there is a drawback it is the weight but I think that it weighs so much because of the quality the pack is made with. I have been on several practice hikes, 2 – 7 miles and the pack feels great with 60 to 80 lbs it’s no problem. Can’t wait to get in the mountains with it I’ll re-post when I get back. So far I’m very impressed.
Pros:
Many options for adding like spike duffel, large and small pouches, rain fly, expandable to giant proportions, binocular pouch, cover for mesh expansion with reversable blaze (nice feature when packing out horns) The pack is very well organized with tons of pockets that are right sized for all kinds of gear.
Cons:
Little heavy but really not too noticeable due to comfort and padding.
So far I am extremely happy with the purchase.

Ordered this gun cover from Remington and just received it. Bought it for my Remington 870, 12-ga. shotgun and noted the following about it: (1) Cordura nylon ‘snout’ which slips over the end of the barrel is a Very close fit on my ventilated rib barrel – particularly because it has one of those ‘HiViz’ magnetic shotgun sight attachments (with the green fluorescent light pipe), and (2) the Cordura nylon ‘snout’ is just long enough to fit from the tip of the barrel down to the knurled magazine cap. The cover just below the Cordura ‘snout’ doesn’t seem to enclose the forearm on the shotgun very well. NOTE ALSO: because of the close/tight fit of the Cordura ‘snout’ on the shotgun barrel, I would think that this cover will probably not fit onto any shotgun that is equipped with an Extended Magazine … (i.e., if your shotgun is a tactical or home defense model with an extended magazine, this cover may not work)

Question, have you tried putting this set up in a backpack scabbard? I have just been wrapping my muzzle loader in a 55 gallon trash bag while in the high country. It works ok but is noisy and hold moisture inside.

I have the first version of these. They are holding up great even after 7 years of abuse. I love the fact you can quickly adjust them to the snow condition and don’t have to deal with the extra length when on packed snow. Like you said, these are the best snowshoes on the market.
I have been wearing the Orange for about 2 week, and really like them.

I find it funny how everybody always has to say almost as good as Swarovski. Why settle for second best? I have been on hunts where those 2-3 min that you can see with the Swarovski meant seeing a big buck before he headed back into thick cover for the day. Are they a good buy for someone on a budget? Yes. Are they as good as Swarovski? No

I wasn’t trying to knock them down because they are a great company and pretty good glass for the price. I am just saying if you can afford the Swarovski then get them. I was using my Swarovisions and my step dad has the Viper HD and I was pretty impressed with them for the price.

I do not have this perticular pair of boots, but I want them. I just recently bought a pair of the Crispi Nevada HTG GTX last week. I bought them because of all the positive reviews on this site about the Crispi boots not to mention Scheels had them on sale for $250 instead of $399.00. I basically bought these boots a few days before my deer hunt. I figured I might be digging my own grave not breaking them in before I left hunting.
I was pleasently surprised. These boots fit and feel great. I would get back to camp after hiking around all day and wouldn’t want to put on my camp shoes. jI walked through all kinds of nasty buck brush and through rock slides and they still look like when I bought them. They are some tough boots. After having this pair I am going to be getting the Idaho GTX for my early season hunts as the Nevada Boots are insulated.

How does this pack handle heavy loads comfortably without any functional load lifter straps?
It make it harder that is for sure. Very good observations!
They pack does handle a large load pretty well, due to the frame, and suspension. But a HUGE improvement would be adjustable load harness.
They are both very good packs. I would rate the Kifaru higher in:
-comfort
-load capacity.
So, I would go with the Kifaru, they also build each pack to your body measurements, so you will get a better fit.
If you get a great deal on the Outdoorsman, also do not hesitate. It is a solid choice.

I don’t have the Viper, but I do have the HD series, which is the top of the line for Vortex. Everything is excellent about the binocular with one exception.The center focus is terrible. I’ve been on 2 hunting trips in the past 2 months and I was refocusing it everytime I turned around. I called Vortex and they suggested I send them in. I started looking at the Vortex line at a local store and they have same problem on the intire line. Outside of this I like everything about the binocular. To me it’s bad enough where I’d probably buy a differentd brand.

I ordered one of these holsters for my GP100 in Feb 2012. It has been TEN MONTHS and still no holster! They have not responded to my last three attempts to communicate with them by telephone and email. VERY disappointed in the poor communication and customer service. I have both the Horn hunter mainbeam & the XL, and absolutely love both packs. On the mainbeam pack, I use it for 3 day bivouac hunts and put a full platypus bladder in each side mesh pocket then secure the load straps. This not only gives you alot more room inside the pack, it stabilizes the pack perfectly. I have never had a single problem with either pack. Very lucky this year, killed a Wyoming antelope and a very nice Wyoming bull elk, then drove to Arizona and killed a great bull there as well. These two packs carried out the boned out elk without any problems. Thank you for making a quality USA product. The packs also hold my bow in place nicely when I have a long hike to hump.

Great all-arounder. Perfect for bringing in a heavy load to camp and packing out a couple of quarters. A little bit heavy for short 1/2 day trips from camp. Rifle scabbard provides access to gun while hiking. Not super quick access, but well within functional. Would not replace for overnight trips, but I must confess that I did by the smaller GunRunner for shorter day trips.
Eberlestock packs with the accessible Gun Scabbard are a great investment in functionality and safety. I spend a lot of time hiking up the side of steep inclines with loose rocks and having all four points contacting the ground is essential. It is nice to not have to worry about dropping the gun for the safety of others and yourself (and the safety of the gun).

yes 2000 without the scabbard, but it is a TIGHT 2000. there are lots of divders and pockets inside. Great for tactical purposes.

I love to read reviews on products I am interested in and I find yours helpfull. But on some products I would like to see dimentions of the holding/cary capacity, like the Alaskin guide bino case. I have the Vortex Viper 15X56 binoculars and they do not fit in many bino cases. So for future reviews could you please include this vital information? I think this case is exactly what I am looking for! I bow hunt the southern desert area of Arizona, spot and stalk. So everything I need must be strategically placed for the long haul! Thanks! Good review, my findings are similar to yours.
I have two pre 64s in 30-06 as well, and a new Weather Extreme M70 in 30-06 with a 22 inch barrel. The new one is very accurate and I am taking it on a sheep hunt this coming August as I don’t want to risk get the old ones beat up on rocks or soaked for days on end if we have bad weather. The recoil pad on the new one allows me to shoot more at the range and I really like it.
However, the balance of the pre 64s is better. Maybe it’s the 24 inch barrel that does it. In the offhand shooting position I can hold the pre 64 steadier. it seems.

Thanks for the comment. I also pack in for 3-5 days with a 50-60 pound pack. This allows me to take my gear, and parts of the animal out on the first trip.
It is rare that you can pack all the way in, and get an animal out in 1 load, unless you have more than 1 person with you and only get 1 animal.
Elk, now way to get out in 1 load.
I take in game bags, put the meat in them and then stuff in the pack. I then move lots of gear to the outside of my pack. I have done this MANY times.

Thanks for the reply. I have never gotten a whole animal out in one trip either while I was on my own. I’ve only ever used externals and just now starting to get into internal frames so I’m still learning about them.
I have just come out of the bush in New Zealand and both my Mate and I had boot failures. Mine were not expensive ones, but I still thought they were good enough for the job, my mates were expensive and ended worse off than mine!
There is one thing 100% guaranteed when hunting in most places in New Zealand, your boots will get wet, it is nearly impossible not to at least cross a river. So generally your boots get wet at the beginning of a hunt and remain wet for the rest of the trip. Will these boots hold up to this sort of treatment?

I like the 2200. I have used it a lot, It has been a ok pack. I have had to get the zippers and a couple buckles replaced, today is the fourth time. It get costly to ship the pack to them, then have to pay them to ship it back. I will not buy another one.

Here is an update from my posting. I was able to take a nice bull on a wounded warrior hunt through Idaho “N” Heroes outdoors. Even though my shot was not the greatest, my elk only went 160 yards before it laid down for the last time. I shoot about 5 days a week, and have not had a problem yet with this bow. I did not like the handle that came with it, I prefer a thin handle, so I took off the wooden one, and wrapped the handle with racket ball hand grip tape. Hoyt has made a great product.

It should be observed that solar panels don’t work very well in cloudy conditions, whereas this would just simply work if you’ve got fuel. I’d probably view it as six of one, half dozen of another in that regard- it has definite survival applications that would work out better than some of the other traditional backpacker gear solutions would.

Being a native from Homestead, but having been gone for twenty years, I was skeptical about using a guide. I knew that I made a good choice in the first thirty second s after meeting captain Lain Godwin. This was my daughters 18th birthday and she wanted to go fishing! Yes I said doughter. Captain Lain made it great! He asked what we wanted to fish for and put us on them! We caught fish the whole time, all his equipment was top notch, we did not have to do anything but fish. There were three women on the boat, two with limited fishing experience. Captain Lain was great, showed amazing patience, and made it a great trip for them as well. You would be hard pressed to find a a better guide or person to go fishing with!

Starting the bowhunting slam from alaska to Iowa for several big game animals, the shuttle T broadhead is the best performing broadhead that has been shot from my bow! I have tried several broadheads such as the muzzy and rage and none have come close to comparing to shuttle T broadheads, complete pass throughs from moose to bears to whitetails and very impressive cutting diameter to cause very easy blood trails and no loss of game, If i had three thumbs i would stick them straight up!!

Good stuff, I broke my left ankle, tried to dislocate my atlas and axis, broke 2 vertebra and 4 spinal processes as well as ripped my right bicep tendon and my labrum in 4 place in Afghanistan, due to an IED attack. I figured life would be a bit of a struggle bow hunting after that, and it was.
I have also learned the act of taking shorter steps while hiking, and abdominal work outs, along with proper stretching of my glutes, hamstrings, piriformis, and hip flexors help keep my pain level more manageable. I have also found out that if I do workouts targeting the muscles of my low back, I tend to get back spasms. I have narcotics that I can take, but mostly use NSAIDS and non aspirin pain reliever.
When I came back from Afghanistan, I had 2 surgeries to my arm and shoulder. I was not allowed to lift more than 1 lb with my right arm, so I developed a head harness to use to hunt with. I tried the bite tab, but it didn’t work for me, and I couldn’t use any part of my right arm. When you can only use one arm you have to use your head, so I did. ( Mom says it is about time.) All this to say, just because you are in pain, you might as well hurt out on the trail than hurt getting lazy at home.
Great review, you got my wheels turning. I was going to get the mini razor HD 11-33×50. It’s slightly lighter, but also has a small objective lense. Vortex has a killer guarantee. Have you ever delt with kowa customer care? Any pro/cons you can think of between the two?

Got one for Christmas (I picked it out) have been using it as a day pack to hike in to new bluegill spots to ice fish. Working well, holds a lot of gear, but just a word for everyone. It fell forward the other day and bumped the front of the radiant heater in the shanty. Immediately, meaning like 1-2 seconds max., it burst into flames. Barely had time to grab it and toss it outside in the snow. Thank goodness the door was open. Hard lesson and a destroyed pack, rubber handle gone as well a big hole and melted zipper. Clumsy on my part but I was really shocked at how flammable this thing was. Nice backpack but please beware.

I have been directed to your website whilst looking for a review on Crispi Kanada boots. When I found the video I was disappointed. Firstly I was surprised that it was a very short review and whilst I was aware that it was just an initial review I would have expected a trip of at least a good few kilometers taking in a variety of wet, dry, muddy, slippy etc etc. The second point I noticed was that your guy was wearing jeans and a leather jacket, hardly what you would expect from a day out on the hill.
Are you able to tell me if there is an updated review of the boots that you have done?
I was looking to buy a pair for my work, hard walking in Scotland but want to see the boots put through some proper action first. Can you help?

These boot have been from Alaska, to the Wind River, so the Escalante Desert. They are fantastic and have had zero failures.
The video was just to show the features. Believe me we have pounded these boots, and they hold up.

Cliff, I just wrote a 1 year update on these. I know a lot of people claim to be rough on gear. I hike in a lot of very steep, rocky, nasty country off trail. They have finally taken a turn down hill. I have busted out the stitches and foot bed. They weren’t designed for this type of abuse and held up well the first year but that’s it. For more traditional type hiking they would be great and last much longer.

I had a pair of the Kenetrek Mountain Extreme noninsulated boots and had a serious problem with them leaking. I cleaned the boots and when I was taking out my insoles i notice a HUGE hole in the heal where my foot had rubbed a hole all the way to the plastic. This surprised me as they had really only been used on a few hunts and had maybe 100 miles or so. I sent the boots to the company and after a week called to make sure they received them. I was told they would call me back. After another week of not hearing anything I called again and was told I was not in the system. They then had to go find my boots. They told me they had called me and e-mailed me and that they were going to offer me a new pair at the discounted price of $300. This floored me! Why the hell would i spend another $300 on a pair of boots that i already spent $400 on and they failed me???!!! I said as much. I was told the tech would call me back and explain. After checking both my email and my voicemail i found that neither had messages from Kenetrek. I called back and told them i had not received anything from them. Obviously, I had not know about it or why would i call to inquire about the boots if i had gotten a message? The person on the phone said they had to review the boots and they would call me back. a short time later i got a call and was told that they would be sending me a new pair and that after review they could see that the boots where not overly worn and that it was not a normal wear issue.
It is great that they are going to send me a new pair of boots and i am thankful but i feel like i should not have had to fight so hard to make that happen. Had i not said anything they would have been fine with letting me spend another $300.
will say this of the boots though, they preform very well in rough terrain. No rolled ankle or sore feet from me. Not ever! The only issue i had was some heal slippage and a few blisters before i broke my feet in. I say feel because I don’t think you can go from shoes and sandals on flat ground to boots and hills without expecting your feet to have a toughing up period. The waterproofing ultimately failed me and a thunderstorm wetted the grass enough that my 8 mile hike was soon very unpleasant as my feet quickly became soaked. Yes, i was wearing a synthetic/wool blend lightweight sock so it was not a sock issue. I use Lorpen socks every time i put on my boots.
Kenetrek boots are comfortable and stable that i can say without a doubt. My boots held water out about as good as a pair of flip flops though. The customer service was shaky at first but in the end they made things right with me. If they fix the leakage issue i would say they are worth the money for sure.

This pack clearly well made with a great attention to detail. Yet, it is very heavy and small in volume considering the weight. I suspect were the frame made of lighter contemporary material, strength would be preserved and weight reduced.

I have both the 2200 and the super day pack and love them both. I bought them for elk hunting and intended on using the super day for my shorter hunts but ended up using the 2200 more. The main reason is that it is capable of packing out heavy loads. When your way the heck back in and you don’t want to have to make more trips that necessary this pack is great. My feeling was that if I shot a bull I didn’t want to have to walk out to get my pack to talk back in and so on.
It is a comfortable pack and the access zipper in the back rest is great when you don’t want to take off the pack. I do think that the pocket situation is a little skimpy but I got over it. Unfortunately, my Nikon spotting scope does not fit in the flap compartment that is intended for such use. That does not make it any less of a great idea or feature though. Something small like a Vortex Razor HD would most likely fit.
It really showed it’s worth when I shot my bull and loaded it u. Even weight distribution and solid feel. It handles a hide quarter just fine. I later used it to help pack out a mule deer and put two hind quarters and back straps on with much the same results.
I really like it you guys did a great write up and I share your 5 star rating.

I love mine. It has served me well. Had an issue with the outside wearing thin and the magnet popping out. Sent it in to Badlands and got a new one the next week. For me this is the best system on the market. Not usre why the huge price jump though I bought mine for around $60 and see they are now about $120.

They do have a long range version of the pack. The frame and harness are the important parts to me. I’ve been using a Bull pack for elk hunting and considering the optics pack recently. Great review sir, and lately I have put my sleeping bag in a dry bag compression sack and strapping it to the top of all my packs which frees up quite a lot of room in my pack. Thanks again.

I own bad lands ,eberlestock the reason I bought eberlestock is the rifle scabbard I hunt with both. The 7000 seams like a good day scout never know what might pop up hunting pack the frame is calling out my name it would be nice if they would make a pack with a rifle carrying system a detachable duffle and a area for a spotting scope with tripod I do like the expansiveness of the eberlestock and the hands on of the badlands I have been looking for that one pack for all situation’s I have not found it yet

I would like to know how these boots fare around cactus. I’m in New Mexico and really don’t use any nylon type boot because of past problems with a cactus needle going through a boot at 9500 ft with the winds whipping and it being around 20 degrees. Please let me know if you can.

I also purchased a brand new USRA, Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in 300 Winchester Mag. This is not the WSM, but rather the full length cartridge. In looking at all the reviews online and after careful consideration I chose the Winchester. I am 46 years of age, former military,”Army”, and I have actively hunted my entire life. After 7, 6 hour trips to the range, Doing it right, using a proper fitting bore quide, starting with a clean cold barrel, firing no more that 3 shots, then letting it cool completely to the touch and properly cleaning, and repeat the process. I have used more than 140 rounds, 6 brands of ammo, more than 6 bullet types and 3 different weights. I have come to the conclusion that the new modern Winchester is the worst rifle I have ever owned. I mounted a New Leupold VX-1 4x12x40 with new Leupold dual dovetail mounts, low rings. The best groups I have been able to get from a Caldwell rest are– THE BROAD SIDE OF A LARGE BARN–. I have done everything most would checking and double checking scope screws and the 2 frame screws. Everything is good and tight, the scope moves as it should when it should and locks into slot. I don’t know if this is just a bad barrel or just a bad rifle all together,r but I will never make this expensive mistake again. In all farness to Olin Chem, I am going to Call Winchester customer service and I am returning this rifle to Winchester and hope to get me a new one or have them replace the barrel, if they refuse, I will probably have them keep and destroy it as it would be unsafe, irresponsible, and unethical for me to sell it or give it away., It’s that bad. I will be happy to come back later to this sight and report on how Winchester has handled the issue with the rifle. There are no points for looks, ergonomics or functionality if it has no accuracy, everything else does not matter. As is, I know I will NOT be taking this rifle hunting. I aim to kill Deer, Elk and Bear, not campers a 1/2 mile away.

I will most certainly return and let you know what Winchester says and or does. If they are willing and able to correct the issue, I will be satisfied, either way I will let you all know. I am aware that even with the best R&D team and quality control a bad apple can get in a box, I guess only time will tell.
I own several Winchester Model 70s. I also own 2 Great Remington Model 700s. And a Ruger Hawkeye. The Super Grade WInchester Model 70s are awesome and a great value. They are also very accurate. Wish they would reintroduce deluxe model 70 Featherweight as I think the current one although nice is not in the same league as the Super Grades. And I mean in relation to value per dollar spent. The cure for the POPULAR Featherweight is a SUPER GRADE version!!

Bought a pair of Zamberlan Elk model boots at Garners Sporting Goods in Pendleton Oregon last fall….first day in wilderness I pulled out 2 lace hooks…retied and kept hunting. 2 weeks later I couldn’t get assistance to replace the boots and was left hanging to get them repaired. I learned that I need to buy from a “big box store” who stands behind their products and to buy other boots!
I spoke to a customer service person at Outdoorsmans last week about the pack I recently purchased – True Timber – Outdoorsmans Hunter\Optics Hunter Pack System . We discussed some problems I noted with the pack waist belt sewing that had ripped. The rep and I discussed the belt with the pack in front of me. He described two plastic tabs with straps attached to the belt that were not in slots on the frame and I believe it was set up that way when I received it. I thought they were to attach extra gear but he said it was extra support for the waist belt. Perhaps that was the cause of the sewing failure. He advised that I return the waist belt and Outdoorsmans would replace it. The company refused to send a shipping label or pay for the costs of shipping it to them (almost $10) despite the fact it could be a product failure. They did agree to ship the replacement part at their expense.
Here is the rest of my critique of the pack. It is a good pack with lots of room for the extended hunting trip we were on into the Rockies. It had convenient access and room for everything I needed for the hunt. Everyone who saw the pack liked it. I did not have a spotting scope but I can see how the pockets make carrying that gear convenient. Those pockets offered more room for other gear and helped organize items.
I thought the bow cam sack/rifle stock sack at the bottom rear was inadequate for my bow, especially for a parallel limb bow. Despite the rep’s insistence that it was adequate I still think it is not. I went back and looked at some videos on YouTube illustrating the use of the pack and maybe I was doing something wrong in packing on my bow – maybe not because it is unclear how a bow was attached using the sack/bucket.
I hate the velcro used to close the flap on the bottomand prefer a snap on this feature like the ones used to secure the other pockets/compartments. With that I think the flap would then secure the lower limb of my bow and prevent the bow from settling down on the pack. I cinched the bow on tight with the compression straps. In the end I really did not have a problem even without the sack/bucket, except getting the bow off required removal of three snaps and straps. I just thought Outdoorsman might re-think the use of that flap for some bowhunters as it would be a nice feature to snap it up with shorter bow risers/parallel limb bows.
The zippers in the top flap were difficult to pull open when the zipper pull was pulled to either full close or open positions as the zipper threads tended to bunch up in the corners, especially with gear in the pockets. The zipper system looks sturdy enough but the colder my hands became the harder it was to open/close them. The smiley zipper located at the bottom of the pack and the pocket on the back worked just fine.
Shoulder and waist belt straps/cinches seemed to slide (loosen) when wet requiring frequent tightening for the most comfortable pack fit. Maybe it was just me or my sweat, but it was bothersome, especially when tired or climbing in a tight spot. The rep suggested using the strap/cinch clips. One of the small ones fell off before my trip so I was cognizant about that during the hunt. Also, once the excess waist cinch straps were in the clips it was more onerous to re-tighten them when they loosened anyway.
I thought the Outdoorsmans pack rain cover/fly was just too small. With the pack fully loaded it did fit circumferentially, but was a pain getting it over the pack and did not extend to the frame on the sides with gear on the back. It might be fine for a pack without attachments onto the outside of the frame. A fellow hunter had purchased one from another manufacturer that was plenty big for his pack and appeared much easier to put over his the pack when the rain storms came up suddenly.
Again maybe its me, but while I appreciated the quality of the water bladder itself, I did not like the Eberlestock mouthpiece on my bladder I purchased through Outdoorsmans. It did not look like anything on the instructions that came with it. It did not take me very long to put a hole in the spongy covering on the mouthpiece, which caused it to leak. I replaced it with a Camelback mouthpiece.
And if it the water tube was to go through the hole in the sleeve for the bladder – and I thought that was what it was for – it did not fit through the grommet. Maybe that was not what the sleeve was for – nor the grommet. Anyway it made it difficult to fill the Eberlestock bladder and so I also jerry-rigged a Camelback snap that allowed me to remove the mouthpiece and attach my water filter pump directly to the hose to fill the pack without removing it from the pack.
Like the above review, I wished there was a tie-down for the tube on the shoulder strap and so jerry-rigged a fix simple enough. Its a detail.
Finally our group used a variety of packs, some issued to Marine Recon units, Kuiu, and Tensing. This was the only one with an external frame. I like the frame and what it can do for many reasons. I found it just hard to sit with the pack on on a slope or incline for the moments you need to catch your breath on a steep climb, without loosening the shoulder and waist straps due to the bottom shelf of the frame itself. Everything has a trade-off perhaps.
Lastly, I talked to two people at Outdoorsmans about the waist belt, neither were very friendly and were mostly defensive, gruff and condescending. Perhaps it is an image they like – good ole boys who don’t put up with a lot of _ _ _ _ . My .02 is they need to improve on customer relations. There are a lot of good packs out there, Like someone once told me, don’t beat yourself up re-inventing the wheel, just copy the good stuff. Next year another company will incorporate Outdoorsmans’ good ideas in a different pack with a better price and friendlier service. Then I would buy my pack from them and not Outdoorsmans.
I will continue to use the pack and make these comments in an effort to suggest improvements to their system. and service I certainly appreciate the new waist belt.

I was wondering how the scent control is on the KUIU Tiburon as compared to the First Lite Merino Wool? Also How do they compare for temperature control in hot weather? I hunt bow Elk and Deer season in Oregon, and it is often 90 degrees or more.

A for scent control they are the same. Merino wool just does not stink after wear.
I would go with the light weight version of these shirts for that kind of heat. They breathe well and seem cooler than cotton. I wear 185 weight in the heat.

Beware.. My Chugach rain pants ripped during their first hunting trip, the 4th day of a 10 day horse back grizzly hunt in BC. Kuiu would no provide a refund or credit against an updrade to the Yukon pants which they claim is more durable.

I love these socks. They fit so well and never slide down. They keep your feet warm and dry. However, there is a flaw in the reinforced heel. On the underside near the arch of your foot they wear badly and pull apart. Eventually a hole appears. I have tried to mend them, but the mended area is irritating to walk on. They need to put as much material on the heel reinforcement as they do on the top of the sock. I hope this is corrected as I want to continue to buy them.

I have been a hunter, camper, hiker ect for 30 plus years. I am a retired Sheriff’s Deputy. I have spent literally thousands of mins and hours in light to heavy boots. Along with all the miles in hunting boots. My point is the shoes/boots. Are only as good as the socks that separate foot from boot. These socks are perfect, indoors or outside. I could say more, but I’ve already took up enough time. All is good, except the same problem as stated above. The heel area is not reinforced enough toward the toes or the area covering the heel area. Thanks….

I have packed out 3 elk now with this pack and agree with Randy 100%. Awesome pack, very durable (dragged behind ATV on rocky trail with minor cosmetic damage) accident, rides great even with a rear and front elk quarter, very well thought out pockets. Only issue is every once in awhile I get a small squeaking noise from the load lifter straps.

So I have plenty of questions as I begin to foray into the world of back country hunting. I am really having a hard time choosing a pack. I have been looking at a HUGE variety of packs mainly from the KUIU and Badlands. I am slowly collecting the ultra light gear needed to do a 5 – 7 day Elk hunt. The hardest part is choosing what kind of C.I. bag I need. I would be doing an archery hunt complete with my own tent, pad, sleeping bag, spotting scope, binoculars, bow, and gear.
Any suggestions for a first time flat lander from Wisconsin?

I’d stay clear of this rain suit. My first disappointment was the sizing. I was convinced by a sales rep that their sizing chart was accurate and that the rain gear was oversized and designed to function as an outer layer. I am 6’0 205 and ordered an extra large. It arrived in a skimpy bag, was very thin and light, and fit as snug as a pair of jeans when placed over a single pair of fall hunting pants. The very first time I wore them out, I hiked into the woods through a thicket and climbed into my tree stand in the rain. By the time it got light, I noticed 4 small rips in the pant leg from contact with brush. When I called customer service the next day, I was brushed off and was told to send pictures and a letter of explanation to their service department and that they did not refund or replace over the phone. No refund was ever issued. These pants may be lightweight and stretch in multiple directions, but they are thin, cheap and cannot compare to Sitka rain gear. Don’t waste your $.

I used this on a backcountry sheep hunt to power what we needed in our camp. (Electronics, DSLR cameras, coolers, etc.) I haven’t seen a more durable and dependable solar pack. And it was so lightweight going up and down the mountain. One of the best features in my mind! Blows Goal Zero out of the water. Never going back.

I have had my AM-15 since December 2014, shot about 300 rounds and cleaned it once, just because I was cleaning everything else I shot that day. This is my first AR, so I am not an expert, but this rifle operated flawlessly and had very little residue to be removed. Compared to everything else I shot that day, you would have thought not more than a couple rounds were fired. This thing is remarkable. I can’t believe the military is not investigating the RF85 treatment. Seems to me that it would be huge advantage to have a reliable weapon that has no lube for the crude to stick too. Great review. Keep up the good work.

I have several clothing items from KUIU and have found that I always prefer to order one size larger. I have been more than pleased with all the items purchased primarilly for Ohio bow hunting. I have bought into the layering concept and my friends think I’m crazy for spending the money I do at KUIU for quality clothing but I get cold easily and I believe KUIU has created great products that have kept me warm and dry thus earning every penny spent. I also hate to feel “bogged down” by heavy clothing and like the more athletic feel provided. I have mid layer, insulating and rain gear as well as a icon 5200 backpack. I normally don’t spend the time on product reviews but feel kudos are warranted to KUIU. thanks

I have hiked with this pack weighing in at 65 lbs.
I HATE hauling more than 50.
You could easily stuff 100 pounds in this pack and it would be as comfortable as any pack out there.

Randy: Your review is spot on. I own several pair of every one of the Kuiu pants and wear them as my every day pants as well as the tiburon pants to the gym every day to work out. I think that if someone is just going to own one pair of Kuiu pants then the alpine pants are the way to go. For 90 degree + weather the tiburon have the edge, but they do get tears in heavy brush, I don’t get that with the alpine or the attack pant. The alpine pant gets a+ from me.

I bought a pair of mountain extreme and wore for 2 seasons and really liked the boot. The heal on one started coming off the boot so instead of just putting some shoe glue inthe heal I sent the boots Iin for repair. 2 months later I received the boots back unprepared and one boot was missing the sole completely. These boots were fine and would have lasted me at least one more season if I had not sent them in for repair. I called kenetrek and spoke with Jim and he said the boots were unrepairable. I am very very disappointed with kenetrek for ruining my boots. In my opinion the sole coming off should have been a warranty issue and theyshould replace them if they cannot fix them. Don’t send them back to the customer in worse condition. Kenetrek has lost this customer over 1 pair of defective boots.

This bow is simply amazing. People complain about vibration and recoil but I’m not too certain those people know what their talking about. Mine came with the rak package as well but as any other archery enthusiast it that wasn’t good enough for me. I threw on a 7 pin iq sight and a rip cord drop away rest. Never have I been able to shoot so consistently. Never have I been able to shoot comfortably at 60+ yards, that is no longer true. I took a deer at nearly 50 yards last year without even thinking twice about taking the shot. As far as the wall, I love it. There is no play in it whatsoever. If you like shooting off the wall this bow is for you. But it’s not like it wants to jump out of your hand either, it’s just simply perfect. Then you’ll have the group of guys who say that thing feels cheap like a toy. It’s not because it’s cheap, it’s because of the carbon compound it’s made out of. It’s supposed to feel light. As far as price goes they’re practically giving this thing away. Hoyt carbon bows are at least double the price, and trust me when I say this, this feels nothing like a hour or Mathews. And I say that in a good way. Go pick one up and try it for yourself. You will not be disappointed. Refuse to follow.

These are horrible. A complete waste of money. No refunds, but you don’t know that until after you have blisters, although at the trade show I purchased them at, I was told there are. Pathetic . I have blisters between my toes and foot pads after wearing for 30 mins. Do not purchase these!

First of all, very helpful review. But I’m torn between these and the Asolo 535s. I’m doing a 2 week trip to the yukon next summer and need something that won’t fall apart 100 miles from nowhere. I’m leaning toward these and was wondering about sizing. I’m usually a size nine, but wear 9.5 sambas with a comfortable amount of wiggle room. Any recomendations?

Hey! So new to this website, and new to the gun industry. Love the build that you did with the Anderson upper. I just bought my lower from them not to long again and was extremely curious about the rails on the free floating barrel. I see that you have the stock picatinny rails, is it easy to instal and uninstall those on that rail system? Haven’t seen much review about the stock rails and how hard it is to take off the Delta ring. Was thinking about getting a different rail for the barrel but if it is easy to add some other picatinny rails and accessories on the rail I might just keep it. Let me know! I bought the 145 zip baselayer and used it in August on the Continental Divide Trail in Colorado. Sometimes above 12,000′. The nights were cool and early mornings usually had frost….brrrr!
I liked the talk-up about how the nuyarn sewing style makes it superior to most other merino wool base layers.
Well, from a technical point, I would say it isn’t noticeably any warmer, nor wicks any better, than quality merino baselayers for half the price. I’m glad I had it on, but could have saved the money and used my older baselayer quarter zip. And, I noticed a bit of itchiness, something the company says nuyarn doesn’t have. At least for me, I felt it to be a tad rougher than the Icebreaker baselayer I have.
So, for me, it wasn’t worth the price. IMHO, the nuyarn is a marketing ploy to justify a high price for a product not in any way superior to comparable weight merino wool baselayers. Better than synthetics, certainly, but that’s all I would give it.

I purchased an Anderson lower from a local gun shop. I didn’t really know much about the company but it looked good and was reasonably priced. Now I am in search of the upper to complete the build. My question is, was the model you reviewed a carbine length or midlength gas system? Do you think it would have made any difference in the outcome of the testing that you did or your satisfaction with the rifle?

excellent rain gear, because of its very light weight i carry this gear with me more than any other. i live in wyoming where we do not get a lot of rain, but i always like to be prepared. i do not use it a lot but when it is needed it is essential. it works great. well worth it.

I have this pack put a mule deer buck (deboned) with the head, and my gear about 75LBS, maybe a little more. Packed it about a mile and a half, I thought it carried the load quite well. No back pain no shoulder pain. Great pack for the money!

I Ordered so Kuiu Gear in December of 2015 and I don’t have enough good things to say. ordering the gear was easy. It shipped in a very reasonable amount of time and the gear is no joke! I just wore the Teton down jacket in sub 0 weather with wind and I was perfectly warm. I did do a exchange for some better fitting clothes (my fault) and customer service was amazing. I talked to Cody in customer service who was awesome.

Rangefinder binocular combination currently require “detuned” glass. The range finder does not get the return signal through the lens coatings. It’s a balancing act. The current HD plus glass shows how good Leica glass can be. But it wont work with the range finder feature.
I first of all would like to applaud the guys at Kuiu for bringing some less expensive alternatives to the table as far as long distance, ultralight weight hunting and traveling packs go. I have nothing but the best to say about their weight, materials, and craftsmanship regarding layout.
My one major issue is with the frame. I’m referring to the 2015 version of the frame, which is when i bought my pack.
The lightweight carbon frame supports loads well, is comfortable, and is sleek enough to feel invisible on your back, however there is one major downfall – one which i believe is the most important when determining a packs usability for long distance hunts – the NOISE factor. The Carbon Fiber Frame for my 2015 icon pro MAKES NOISE!
I don’t mean it that it shuffles and i can hear the cordura material rubbing together, and Im not talking about my stuff shuffling inside the pack – these are all but non-existent compared to the squeaking and creaking that this pack makes. This is an issue with the shoulder strap connection points and the upper attachment points of the backpack to the frame, and when i say it squeaks, i mean that every single step i take turns into a squeak or a creak in the backpack – so much so that it makes it difficult to hear things around me and has the ability to spook prey.
I have contacted kuiu about this issue and they remain silent. I have scoured the internet for ways to deaden the problem, everything from duct tape to graphite powder, graphite oil, mixtures of the two…nothing fixes this issue.
I hiked 80+ miles with my pack last summer, including a 30 mile, 50lb trek deep into the olympic peninsula wilderness (WA based) with my kuiu and my only complaint is the frame noise – however i never realized until now how much of an intolerable burden this would be.
I should mention that my fiancé has the same pack and doesn’t seem to be bothered as much by the frame noise as i am, but this is my solution…
I have a daypack that i use and love, made by Nimrod (WA Based pack design company) and they have an external frame that has wonderous capabilities when it comes to attachment and design. simply made out of aircraft aluminum, i attach my kuiu pack to their frame and off i go, no noise, no issues. I consider this the best of both worlds, although i cannot use kuiu’s hip belt with the Nimrod frame, I am content to be rid of the frame noise.
Other than that, its a great bag, and I’m happy with my purchase.

Great pack review! I have the 1850 with the same suspension, and love it. Kuiu makes some great stuff… their bino harness is the best I’ve used (and I’ve used a few others), their Tiburon line is fantastic for warm weather hunts, especially if you’re doing any hiking. Great stuff.

I was having the same problem with squeaking on my Icon Pro 1850 after about 2 years of use (which really amounts to about 30 – 40 days in the field). I tracked down the source of the squeak to two primary areas- the slots where the webbing goes through the upper load-lifters riser slots, and where the lower end of the frame sits inside the pocket of the hip belt. I am able to produce other small squeaks and noises from the buckles, webbing connections, etc. but the offensive squeaking is coming from the two areas mentioned first.
This squeak was eliminated on my pack by using some 1/2″ wide ultra high molecular weight tape (UHMW tape) that I had previously purchased on Amazon, some old wood-wood drawer glides. I cut about 2″ pieces and stuck them through the slots where the straps goes through the load lifters. I also ran the UHMW tape along all the contact surfaces of the frame, that sit inside the hip-belt pocket. I have yet to take it out for a real hunt, but in my trial use, it is back to being silent.
First, let me say that in my pack, the load-lifter squeak could be 90% rectified by adjusting the straps to move the buckle away from the frame. For some reason on my pack there are two straps and two buckles between the shoulder strap (through the frame slot) to the pack, and it was the doubled-over sewn end of the straps that were rubbing on the frame slots and singing like a crickets in my ears with ever step. That carbon fiber frame has some remarkable acoustic properties!
I know the UHMW tape fixed mine, but I’m not sure what else could be done about the bottom pocket squeak. Perhaps the end of the frame could be sanded, buffed and polished very smooth, and waxed with some automotive wax? Maybe using some of the fuzzy side of adhesive velcro to cover the contact areas would do it? Maybe just cut a few layers of a plastic trash bag to cover the frame where it goes into the hip belt pocket? Or maybe just take it apart and wash it real well.
Anyhow, it’s a great pack and definitely worth seeking a solution if your pack ends up with a squeak.
If the person “wants to carry a lot” they would buy a larger pack. Common sense.
If you find a pack to be too small, then you should not have bought it in the first place. Read the cubic inch capacity before purchasing.

The light works great if you are using it as a hand held but if you put it on a weapon mine did not work very well. The light would shine but every time I pulled the trigger the light would flash and part of the time would cut off completely. As for the customer service it is laughable. I’ve been talking on the phone and emailing since December and still do not have my light back in my hands. I had to ship it to China and then it was delayed and the company said it would not be moving forward until after Feb 20 because of Chinese new year. I like the light as a handheld, the distance it shines is awesome but as for a light to put on a ar 15 or any other weapon it is clearly not capable. I just wanted to let anyone looking at purchasing one of these to try and find one to play with before you buy, you may find something better for a weapon light.

Can you tell me how noisy these pants are? I just received my pair of Teton Stretch Woven pants and they were noisy! I’m an archery hunter that enjoys silent stalking. I can’t stand even the slightest of “swishing” sounds from the pant legs rubbing together. I’m definitely returning the Tetons and I’m leaning towards ordering the Tiburons instead. Any input on noise level would be great – especially if you can comment about the comparison between the Tetons and Tiburons. I know I can return them if I don’t like them, but I don’t enjoy paying for shipping to and fro… Thanks in advance.

“STORM WORTHY”….!!!!….This Kuiu tent is a one season tent!!! Summer… and you better hope the wind does not blow any sand or rain around (ie horizontal like mountain storms do or the constant wind on an Alaskan beach)… Good quality and set up design is quick but the main tent is 75% mesh and the only thing that I can see it is storm worthy of is gnats and mosquitoes…..I will try their nes ” 4 seasons tent and hope for better results… Have a three man Hilliberg and it is outstanding!!! A little heavy for the trail but still maybe the finest tents in the world ….

Just received Tiburon gloves. I have always worn medium sized gloves in any brand, these are huge. The fingers are the right length but I can fit 2 of my hands in them, unfortunately, medium is the smallest they offer. Completely unusable, so loose. I guess these are only made for people with really fat hands and short fingers.

Shot the Ruger 9mm, love the trigger, sights and accuracy. Have carried a Glock 23 for 25 years on and off duty and would probably pick the Ruger over the Glock. I was really impressed with the Ruger. Just my opinion.

A great system – simple and works very well. My only suggestion is that a better alternative than split-rings is needed to attach the harness loops to the binoculars. I can’t bring myself to force split rings over my Zeiss bino loops and likely scratch and wear the loops. My solution so far is to use electrical cable ties to go from harness loops to the bino loops.
There is really no reason not to put fluoro on your baitcasting setups, the exception being topwater fishing, or heavy cover flipping. Just practice tying a good Palomar knot with no line crossing and you’re golden. I only use braid on spinning reels, with a fluoro leader when the water is clear.

Picked up one Feb. 2016 and have shot about 2,000 rounds thru it, no FTF or FTE. Love the gun, also have a Glock 19, Ruger is a bit heavier, but I rate it better. It is now my carry (ccw). The magazine rlse. is a bit better for me than the Glock. I am a lefty and like amdx. slide lock. Great gun from Ruger, and not as ugly as my 19 4gn.

Just a heads up to those that are contemplating purchasing these boots. They are a really nice boot for what they’re supposed to be used for. They fulfill a very specific need, and that is steep, off trail mountaineering. These are 100% not a trail boot. On trail the sole is very rigid with almost no flex so you’ll feel in each step what some call a robotic step. If you want a boot with more flex to feel or conform to what is beneath you (i.e. Rocks) these are definitely not the boot for you. With no give in the sole and you step on a rock sticking up into the trail, with out any give in the sole, your ankle has to give, sometimes throwing you off balance a bit. Think of strapping a piece of plywood to the bottom of your foot and going hiking – honest to god. Again, a quality boot but Kuiu and Randy need to keep in mind that most people will think they’re buying a really good boot that can be used as an all around hunting / hiking boot.
As the proud owner of multiple Yeti products, I can say that your review is spot on. Yeti and a handful of other makers have really revolutionized what a cooler is capable.
Of note on your longevity test… Yeti recommends “pre cooling” your cooler before using it for a long period. Basically, you should add ice the night before using it, then dump the ice before loading the cooler and adding new ice. Sounds silly if you live in the North, but here in Texas summer I’ve tested a “pre cooled” test side-by-side with one that wasn’t and it made more than a day of difference before my ice totally melted.

Ive been “breaking” this pack in for several miles. The pack itself is awesome!!! The waist belt…? While the shouldler straps get thinner..the belt doesnt seem to want to form.. Pack wants to keep sliding down..not past my hips….but far enough down that it puts pressure on my shoulders. It needs a belt that can be custom formed..or wear it till your shoulders bruise.

Just received a 10.5 upper from Anderson and have to return it first thing unfortunately. The free float hand guard is not aligned straight with barrel, off center. They’re sending a return label, etc., so it won’t cost me anything. Just a little disappointed I guess and hoping I made a good decision about now.

Very disappointed in the Danner boot. Been wearing Danner boots for 20 plus years. Recently purchased 2 different styles and am very disappointed in both the quality of the boot as well as the customer service. Have a pair of pronghorn and the the sole came unglued from the boot. I wear these boots maybe 3 time a year. Both Product made in China. Not even a American made boot anymore. Customer service was no help or even consider a resole. Danner company doesn’t care about the quality or the consumer anymore. Very sad and unhappy

Why do these reviews never have anything from the Pelican line up? From the features and construction of the Pelican line, they look superior to all here. Their latches and rigid carry handles appear to be stronger and lock better. I do like what I see from the Orion cooler here, but why is there no pic of the Jeep on top of the other coolers? I am mainly just tired of all the Yeti hype. They are functional, but there are plenty other choices out there. Yeti just seems to have the “cool factor” more so than the others.

I have taken my Ignite 4k white water rafting on The Ocoee River (with the helmet attachment), snorkeling on several reefs in Palm Beach, FL including The Blue Heron Bridge at Phil Foster Park, and my son used it on his drone. We got great video and pictures. It was easy to use and came with every attachment we needed. Awesome!!

Awesome until you drop it and it gets a dent in it. At that point it is useless. A 3 dollar igloo from Walmart does a better job now! We loved it up to that point. A lot of money down the drain with one slip!

I have just disposed of my Eastman shooting stick, its the single stick version of the above with camo coating. After a few years the camo coating became so sticky (like glue) that the stick could not be extended without excessive force. Tried cleaning it with soap, white spirit..no good.

I also tried the AO Trail Pants blind, and instantly fell in love with them! I had never heard of them, and stumbled on them looking for some mid-weight convertible pants. I never found the convertibles after I found these.
I purchased mine from an outfitter/online discount retail store front, and before I could get out of the changing room, I knew I had to have them.
They wear awesome, and pack even better. They can be used on the trail, in the field, or a face to face customer meeting (before hitting the trail!)
I have worn them at least twice a week for 5 weeks now, there was no color run, or fade on the first wash or the 5th wash! They take up so little space in a pack, and wash w/ dark or light colors.
The snapped cuffs are great for keeping the warmth in on those cold morning hikes, and the zipper pockets I agree provide a piece of mind on the important things!
My only two complaints might be the velcro back pockets, and the undersized belt hoops. Eventually you are going to want to use another belt, and it can be a challenge to slip another through the hoops.
The reinforced knees and the gusset in the crotch & seat repel water, and do a great job of staying clean.
They fit well. wear well, and can’t wait to get back into the store for another pair.

This rifle does indeed seem flawless. My game really is spear fishing, but all outdoor sports interest me. When I was younger, much younger, I was a C.C.F cadet at school. The rifle range was one of my favourite places, and my aim was really good too. I am not sure how I would go on today, my eyesight is not what it used to be!
Ditto with my duraleader line – it cracked and split very severely, so was not usable at all. Love the rod. Wonder what line would be a good match for it?
I’m looking for buy a really nice pair of hiking boots that will withstand abuse. I really like the Lowa Tibet, but they make the regular width in an E and my foot is a D. So now I’m weighing my options between the Lowa Ranger or Trekker versus the Crispi Nevada. How do the Lowa Ranger and Trekker compare to the Crispi Nevada? I don’t mind spending the extra money for the Crispi Nevada is they are a better boot.
Going to haveto look into this a bit more as the Crispi and the Lowa were tested by different people. I (Cory) test the Lowa boots and I do not think you can go wrong there. I know that most of the guys really like the Crispi boots though. Sorry I know that is not much help. Have you tried them on?

I also love my brand new Swarovski binocs…a splurge but I will never be sorry! I got the winged eye cups from Ace Photo Digital, (Angled eyecup (f/10X42 WB EL) but I can’t fit them into binocs. I removed the regular eyecup, but can’t screw in the winged. Am I doing something wrong? Are they maybe the wrong size? Any advice would be appreciated!

Are you looking for the best glass out there? The Swarovski 10X42 SLC is the answer. I’ve owned a pair for 5 years now. I bought them 2 years used from my cousin. That was one of the best investments I have made towards my collection of outdoor gear.
I have been very satisfied with how well they have held up towards my abuse, at least until the end of the fall season last year. They seemed to not focus as crisp and the right glass had just a hint of blur in the middle that I couldn’t get to go away. Naturally, I assumed it was from the beating these bino’s have taken through the last 5 years.
I called Swarovski and explained what was going on and they told me to send them in and they will see if they can fix the problem. Of course I was expecting a bill when they were through. About 4 weeks later I receive a package with my bino’s in it. The invoice said it was covered under warranty. What a great company to warranty an item that was not a factory defect and especially after almost 7 years. They fixed the blur problem and did an internal and external cleaning and polish the lenses. I have never seen the glass so crisp and clean in a very long time.
Although the retail price at 2000 dollars is a little steep, if you are patient and watch for sales online or check out certified Swarovski dealers on Ebay, you will find a good deal for these. You will not regret the purchase and you will never have to buy another set of binoculars again.

I’ve been using one for about a year now and have found it to be a great headlamp. I use it for work (it was a tax write-off ), as well as hiking, backpacking, hunting and camping so it sees a lot of use.
No doubt there are less expensive headlamps out there that offer great performance.
However, out of the half dozen or so headlamps I own this one has become favorite. Here’s a few reasons why:
1. The angle and light density on the beam is perfect for hiking. Every time I have to go back and use one of my other lamps, this is the first thing I notice, and miss.
2. Simple and easy to use interface. Big knob on the side turns it on and adjusts brightness. Can be used with gloves.
3. Love the 100 lumens! Most of the time I use at 50% or less, but when I need to light up the darkness it has some serious output.
4. Uses 123 batteries. I know some people don’t like these types of cells, but I have found them to be reliable and efficient. Just make sure you don’t buy them at REI or Walgreens, they are way too expensive in those types of stores. Order them off the internet in bulk and save anywhere from 50-75%. I also like their cold weather performance and long storage life.
5. Built to last – it’s a Surefire.
6. Made in USA.

Packing in gear for a big game hunt weight is a primary factor, durability and reliability should be expected. Having multiple sizes of bags is a major bonus, the Carnivore is perfect for packing out high country mulies and keeping the weight down. In Alaska where the moose must be quarter, not boned the moose sized bags will cover the entire quarters. The big game bags are a must have for any serious hunter.

The review of the Caribou Gear game bags is spot on in my eyes. I felt that it was a solid objective review of all the practical applications of the Caribou Gear product line that can be assosciated not only with the Carnivore system, but the entire line of the Caribou Gear game meat retrieval system. I am proud to say that I utilize these game bags as a guide in western Washington when I am packing out meat from remote, back country locations. The game bags not only haul the mail when it comes to Roosevelt Elk and Columbia Black-tail Deer, but also in my home state of Pennsylvania where I use the bags to save steps in processing White-tail Deer, Eastern Wild Turkey, and all my edible game fishes. For example, instead of dragging a deer out of the timber two miles only to hang the animal on a gambrel system to skin and quarter; I am now able to field dress, skin, debone, and pack out only quality meat with my Caribou Gear game bags and a small pack in tarp. Now, all I have to do before I process the venison into my desired cuts is empty my game bags on the butcher block and go to work trimming, sliceing, sawing, or cubing my meat. JOB DONE!!! I have used this pack on a few trips now and i love it. It has a lot of padding and is very comfortable on the long hikes that I have been on. It holds my spotting scope and tripod very well and love the side pocket were the scope fits in. I put my bow on the back of the pack and carried that around with me and the straps hold it in place very well. I’ve tried a lot of packs out and most don’t fit me because i am pretty skinny but this one fits perfectly. Great pack for backpacking in the high country for a few days.

I bought a pair of these boots and they leaked after 1 week hunting. I tried to return them or get them repaired with no luck from Kenetrek. I’ve owned other hunting boots from Cabelas and Danner over the years that did not leak like this. These boots had a poor or defective membrane or liner and Kenetrek did not warranty them. I would not recommend buying the Kenetrek Mountain Extremes. Sam Mazzeo.

I love my Danner Pronghorns. I have had mine for 4 years now and they are still going strong. Very Comfortable and easy to get alone with. In each of those 4 years I would say a walked at least 75 miles in them. There is one think I can’t stress enough about with these type of boots and that is to treat the leather like you would your own skin. What I mean by this is to condition them as needed like you would if your skin on your hands was starting to crack.
I bought my first pair of pronghorn boots December 2013, I have worn these boots everyday and they are one of the best boots Ive ever owned period. I Spent 4 months hiking 5 to 10 miles aday in our mountains, thru water everyday, down paved roads, side walks and the only rest they got came from the 22k miles they traveled on my harley as my motorcycle boots! I ordered two more pair today! Plus these still have 6 months of life left not bad to hold up to my daily abuse year round. I payed $123.00 total last year and for that price there’s no other boot that comes close to this kind of performance!
Have a pair of the Hard Scrabble and a pair of the Mountain Extremes insulated. Both are great boots. Have had Scrabble for two seasons and Extremes for one season. Started to see some separation on the toe guard of the Extremes w/i 3 months. Put some shoe goo on them and seems to be holding.
No leaks to date.
Have had a 4 pairs of the Mendel Canada boot by Cabelas. They are more comfortable but not as supportive as the Kenetreks.
The scrabble did not provide enough support for heavy pack loads-70+/- lbs in steep terrain. The Extremes on the other hand are really nice. Particularly side and downhill. Ankle twisting is not an issue. Soles seem to be holding up well so far.
Do have one hot spot on the R heel but may be due to the insoles I replaced.
Good boots but pricey. Would buy them again.

Uninsulated would go down to about 35 with some snow. If you are wearing a good wool sock. The insulated will be comfy down another 20 degrees at least.
The Crispi hunter would be comparable to the extreme insulated. Hope that helps.

I was just trying out those boots in the story (I live in Norway) and they seemed to be super comfortable.
My question is:how waterproof they are?I mostly hike in Norway and forests in here are wet and soggy.I very often go in 3-4 inches deep water etc.
My impression after trying them on were exactly as You described above but I would like to know more details about waterproofness-if You have them of course 😉
I am hesitating between those and Meindl Dovre GTX Extreme.
Both are about the same comfortable but Crispi have softer sole which I prefer…on the other hand I know that Meindl=good quality and I don’t know much about Crispi beside they fact that they are made in Italy.They are popular here in Norway but actually You are the first person who tested that exact model that interest me and I would love to hear more about them.
Anyway I will appreciate any more info and addictional thoughts that You have/had on those boots.

Crispi does a very good job of adhering Gore Tex to the boot. This is critical. If the boot does not have a good bond, you will get constant flex in the gore Tex and it will eventually wear out…so if you keep the moisture ankle bone deep or shallower it should not leak. Take good care of the boot after getting wet, dry well, and treat with the product Crispi recommends.
I would think in the conditions you described, you could get that boot to function well for 2-3 years.

The Editor is right on with that response. Crispi actually utilizes three different types of Gore, and regarding walking through 2-3 inches of water, you will be just fine. A good idea is to use their imperwass (or something similiar) on the leather before venturing out in these ultra wet conditions, just for longevity purposes – (all leather boots should have this done).
My testimonial:
I recently went on a hunting trip with my uncle and his buddies. Three weeks before I left, I ran into Joshua (he does sales or promotional work for Crisipi) at a seminar and he totally sold me on the Hunter and the Wild after trying them on and going through the features. Both my uncle and I bought a pair of Crispi Hunters before we left because the area we were hunting in was going to be very marshy, and I had never put a hunting boot on out of the box that was so darn comfortable.
My uncle is a little thrifty, but he finally broke down and bought a pair, even though it was quite a bit more than he was used to spending on boots. Long story short – He and I were the only two out of 9 that didn’t have wet feet the whole 5 day trip!
Now, and this is no exaggeration, all 9 of us have the same boot, like some Crispi sponsored Hunting team or something. The only bad thing I can say about Crispi is that now I cannot go back to low end $200 hunting boots, but over the years I have realized with outerwear and boots – if you buy a quality product you will have a quality experience. I don’t spend money on many luxuries, but hunting is my favorite past time, so spending a little more on something that actually works is an easy decision.

I would go with the bow that has local knowledge and service. You will be in need of a tune up within 1-2 hundred shots.
Outside of that factor, I would go with the Hoyt. While solving CAM LEAN is intriguing to me, I cannot see how you can get more accurate than the Hoyt.

This was not a hit for me. The neck yoke rubbed all the time no mater how I tried to adjust them. I finally cut the yoke off, attached my old bino harness and used the cover and waste strap, for the remainder of the hunting year. This has been the most comfortable for me. I used the S4 system while spot and stalk antelope hunting for 5 or 6 days before I had to go back to my old harness. Good concept, but I think it would work better with a harness than the yoke.
So if i understand the review correctly, 2 guys with 2200 packs stripped of gear were able to pack out all of the elk meat in one trip?
I am in the market for a pack and trying to decide between the 2200, 2800, and 4500. We do 3 days out and then return to base camp to replinish. Thanks.

We did not haul the meat out in 1 load with 2 2200 packs.
We had 4 of us, only 2 guys had the 2200.
With a 2200 you can easily haul the rear quarter of an elk. The 4500 or the 2800 will not haul more meat, they just all become uncomfortable with more weight.
Personally, I think the 2200 is the best Badlands pack. It is set up to haul out meat.
We used one on a Desert Sheep hunt, we packed enough for a 5 day pack in hunt with it.

As you most likely realize, the actual shooting speed will change with each person shooting the bow. The actual speed as they tested it may verry well be 323. If you are going to review something, how about keeping to what you actually tested. This will give more credibility.
We did not test the actual shooting speed of this bow, and we did comment that we felt 323 was NOT accurate.
Many factors weigh into a bows speed: Arrow Weight, Draw Length, just to name a couple.
The man gave a great review. I have the bow, and the specs they tested at will not produce 323, but its still fast…

I am not the hiker, but I do walk and ride a bicycle a bit. I have had problems with my feet being cold and or sweaty. I walked a bout 2.5 mile during lunch today mostly uphill and it is about 38 degrees outside. My feet did not get cold and did not get sweaty with these socks. They did give good cushion and I am thrilled with them. I’m going to get myself a few more of these Omni wool socks.

The Crispi fits me a little better due to the larger toe box.
Both will last you many years, and perform well.
I would call it a draw and get one that you can get the best deal on.
I can get you 20 % off on Crispi if you go that route.
The Crispi comes with a slightly better insole.

The ox is far more comfortable than any other pack I have used to date. I have used the Cabelas Alaskan Guide exclusivly for my past elk hunts. On my last hunt a weld on the frame broke and I decided to try the ox. Although the price tag is high its more than worth the money just for the comfort of the pack and with the badlands unconditional guarantee I know its the last pack I will ever need. I did find it made hauling a large load much easier on my body.

Got one in 1976. Used it while backpacking, worked great for all my cutting tasks. Gave it to my son a few years ago, got it back recently because he wasn’t using it. He lost the lanyard and belt loop portion of the sheath, but otherwise the knife is still in good shape. I really enjoy using this classic knife!

I want to thank you for the information on this site. I researched boots for a long time before finally committing on the Crispi Hunter boots because of the reviews found here. I had my search down to Kenetrek, Lathrop and sons, and Crispi. I tried the Kenetrek on at a hunting show and they felt pretty comfortable but felt way too stiff for my taste. Lathrop and sons won’t let you try their boots off carpet if you want to return them. I received these in the mail and instantly was pleased by the quality workmanship and lightness. They felt almost as comfortable as my Danner Pronghorns, no kidding.
I was excited to take these out on a field test. I live in Western Colorado which is very rocky, high desert, and very steep. Day 1, found us doing some pretty mild trail hiking on sandstone washes and rocky ledges. They felt slightly stiff at first and being the tallest boot I have ever owned took a couple miles to get use to the feel. Towards the end of the 5 mile loop. I was climbing up anything I could find, side hilling, and trying to find a weakness. However, I was only becoming frustrated at how well they preformed out of the box.
The next test needed to push them to a much higher level. We have a Mtn just outside of town called Mt Garfield. It’s 2 miles straight up 2,000 vertical feet of clay dirt, scrambling up rocks, and side hilling shale. The temps have been unseasonably high here this time of year. We hit the trail at 10 am, temp started at 55 degrees and reached 64 by noon, with a slight wind. It took under an hour to reach the summit. These boots ate up the trail and felt like heaven on the feet. They gripped like a goats hoof. My feet normally run a little hot but felt great all day. I didn’t even want to take them off and put by car sandals on after the hike. I have also taken these on several more trips off trail up the bookcliffs. Most of this terrain is very similar to shale fields found above tree line. They cut into the hill side with a ton of bite and equal amount of ankle support. These boots will take you anywhere you are breve enough to go.
I wear Cabelas ingenues medium weight hiking socks and upgraded the insoles to the Mendle perfect hiker insoles. I would highly recommend upgrading to a higher quality insole with cork. The socks are also wonderful with a built in liner sock and x-static.
I marked down these boots on value because if you don’t find them on sale they are super expensive. I also marked them down on durability because I believe the Kenetreks would probably outlast these. These, however, are the most comfortable out of the box boots I have ever owned. If you are on the market for this style of boot. Buy these and don’t look back.
I have the Big Buddy heater and have used it for 3 years. I have used it in tents, pop-up campers, and the garage to good effects. The wind can obviously take the heat out fo the tent, but it keeps things comfortable on low even when in the 20s outside. When I crawl out of the sleeping bag, I kick it up to high (both burners) and it gets toasty, probably hot enough to melt nylon if it touched the guard. The tip-over safety works as advertised. Some excursions have been to elevations above 9000ft and after getting it lit, it works well. Getting it lit can be a challenge up high, but if the igniter is glowing it works. I’d recommend you bring an alternate ignition source of that reason. The big buddy takes 2 LP bottles, or you can only operate it on low (single burner). High burns 2 bottles in a few hours. Low burns one bottle in about 8 hrs.

I love this pack! I have taken it on several multi-day backpacking trips and day hikes. I take it almost everywhere because of it’s versatility and comfort. I really like the fact I can throw my rifle in the scabbard and be hands free. If you have never had a pack with this feature. I believe you’ll be converted after your first trip. Tip for bipod users: look at the Stoney Point Rapid pivot line up. These bipods quickly attach and detach which will make it much easier getting your gun in/out of the scabbard. Also note that you cannot sit down while your rifle is in the scabbard.
I used this pack last year on a 6 day high country mule deer hunt in Colorado. It preformed flawlessly hauling 60 pounds of gear 14 miles in. I used the “spike camp” duffle for my camp gear on the hike out, while filling the mesh area with an entire boned out deer and its cape. Even though the pack was over 110 pounds it was fairly comfortable.
The J34 is by far my favorite backpack. The fact you can unzip one zipper and load this bad boy up with pelts, sheds, or a huge load of meat is awesome. If you don’t get lucky, it rides nice and tight like a day pack. If you like multifunctional equipment as much as me. You’ll love this backpack.

I have had a pair for 5-6 years, they have packed out many heavy loads, but they are starting to hurt my feet. They press up hard on the ball of my foot. Have tried many insoles with no luck. They are a tough, very supportive boot, I hate to give them up.
I have the 2200 and the 4500. I tend to overload my 2200 I stuff it full till the seams look like they are going to pop. My 2200 is one of the first they made. I believe it is a little tougher than the newer models. Have had very good service form Badlands. I like my 2200 for day trips, but if I’m going longer I take my 4500. Make sure you get the right belt size, a lot of people don’t know they come in different sizes. My waist is 31 and I need a medium, can’t get a large tightened up enough.
I really like mine. Tough pack, very comfortable with heavy loads. I packed a front and rear quarter of an elk for 10 hours. I was in sorry shape when I got out, but I don’t think I could have done it without this pack.
I got this shotgun 3 yrs ago for a wedding gift. I have to admit that I was on the Benelli bandwagon at the time, but after using it for duck hunting for several years I have had numerous problems with the trigger not working.
I know you can attach a butt bucket to the pack, but with the angled design does it make it awkward to use the quick release to remove a bow and pull it out while on your back?
I would NOT recommend adding the butt bucket and attaching a bow. you are correct the angle of this would cause the bow to canter our really weird.

Great review! I have the nomad and it works alright up to 30x. After that it’s just to fuzzy to be of any use. I found a deal on this spotting scope and picked it up for my dad. Wow, incredible clarity even at the 60x power. I’m afraid my dad will have to wait, until I can find another deal.
also try the Mr. Heater Little buddy. its a smaller version of this with all the great featurs of the big one. its about $20 cheaper and heats less but is nice if your trying to fit 4 people in an ince fishing tent or if you have to spen a cold night in a small area like your car. A choice product to have around on a cold night.

Purchased the Crispi Idaho GTX boots right before I left for a hunt in Wyoming this year. I received the boots 3 days before my trip. I tried them on, that was it! I took a huge gamble by bringing them on a rugged packing trip. I just want to say, THESE ARE THE REAL DEAL!! Put these on at the trail head and hiked in about 5.5 miles up steep and rugged terrain and set up camp. I put on 2 pairs of Merino wool socks just to be safe. I am an avid hunter and hiker, I hiked about 5-6 miles a day and had zero problems. My feet were very comfortable and the support is amazing. These boots are also very light for a hunting boot. These are by far the best pair of boots i have ever purchased!! Do yourself a favor, by them. FYI, my hunting buddies had equally priced boots (not saying brand), and got blisters on there heels.
Got this pack to elk hunt this fall. So far just hiking on trails, preping for the hunt this pack is awesome. The multifunction of having a day pack or full blown spike camp pack is very appealing to me. The pack is layed out very well with many pockets and organizes extremely well. If there is a drawback it is the weight but I think that it weighs so much because of the quality the pack is made with. I have been on several practice hikes, 2 – 7 miles and the pack feels great with 60 to 80 lbs it’s no problem. Can’t wait to get in the mountains with it I’ll re-post when I get back. So far I’m very impressed.
Pros:
Many options for adding like spike duffel, large and small pouches, rain fly, expandable to giant proportions, binocular pouch, cover for mesh expansion with reversable blaze (nice feature when packing out horns) The pack is very well organized with tons of pockets that are right sized for all kinds of gear.
Cons:
Little heavy but really not too noticeable due to comfort and padding.
So far I am extremely happy with the purchase.

Ordered this gun cover from Remington and just received it. Bought it for my Remington 870, 12-ga. shotgun and noted the following about it: (1) Cordura nylon ‘snout’ which slips over the end of the barrel is a Very close fit on my ventilated rib barrel – particularly because it has one of those ‘HiViz’ magnetic shotgun sight attachments (with the green fluorescent light pipe), and (2) the Cordura nylon ‘snout’ is just long enough to fit from the tip of the barrel down to the knurled magazine cap. The cover just below the Cordura ‘snout’ doesn’t seem to enclose the forearm on the shotgun very well. NOTE ALSO: because of the close/tight fit of the Cordura ‘snout’ on the shotgun barrel, I would think that this cover will probably not fit onto any shotgun that is equipped with an Extended Magazine … (i.e., if your shotgun is a tactical or home defense model with an extended magazine, this cover may not work)
I have used these for a couple years and couldn’t agree with you more. Simply the best bags on the market.
Question, have you tried putting this set up in a backpack scabbard? I have just been wrapping my muzzle loader in a 55 gallon trash bag while in the high country. It works ok but is noisy and hold moisture inside.

I have the first version of these. They are holding up great even after 7 years of abuse. I love the fact you can quickly adjust them to the snow condition and don’t have to deal with the extra length when on packed snow. Like you said, these are the best snowshoes on the market.

I find it funny how everybody always has to say almost as good as Swarovski. Why settle for second best? I have been on hunts where those 2-3 min that you can see with the Swarovski meant seeing a big buck before he headed back into thick cover for the day. Are they a good buy for someone on a budget? Yes. Are they as good as Swarovski? No

However, they are pretty dang good, and some people want to spend their money on other things.
The viper will get the job done, but they are NOT swarovski.
I wasn’t trying to knock them down because they are a great company and pretty good glass for the price. I am just saying if you can afford the Swarovski then get them. I was using my Swarovisions and my step dad has the Viper HD and I was pretty impressed with them for the price.

I do not have this perticular pair of boots, but I want them. I just recently bought a pair of the Crispi Nevada HTG GTX last week. I bought them because of all the positive reviews on this site about the Crispi boots not to mention Scheels had them on sale for $250 instead of $399.00. I basically bought these boots a few days before my deer hunt. I figured I might be digging my own grave not breaking them in before I left hunting.
I was pleasently surprised. These boots fit and feel great. I would get back to camp after hiking around all day and wouldn’t want to put on my camp shoes. jI walked through all kinds of nasty buck brush and through rock slides and they still look like when I bought them. They are some tough boots. After having this pair I am going to be getting the Idaho GTX for my early season hunts as the Nevada Boots are insulated.
How does this pack handle heavy loads comfortably without any functional load lifter straps?
It make it harder that is for sure. Very good observations!
They pack does handle a large load pretty well, due to the frame, and suspension. But a HUGE improvement would be adjustable load harness.
I am trying to decide between this pack and a kifaru. If you have any experience with a kifaru which would you recommend? I am 6’7″ and 235 lbs,

They are both very good packs. I would rate the Kifaru higher in:
-comfort
-load capacity.
So, I would go with the Kifaru, they also build each pack to your body measurements, so you will get a better fit.
If you get a great deal on the Outdoorsman, also do not hesitate. It is a solid choice.

I don’t have the Viper, but I do have the HD series, which is the top of the line for Vortex. Everything is excellent about the binocular with one exception.The center focus is terrible. I’ve been on 2 hunting trips in the past 2 months and I was refocusing it everytime I turned around. I called Vortex and they suggested I send them in. I started looking at the Vortex line at a local store and they have same problem on the intire line. Outside of this I like everything about the binocular. To me it’s bad enough where I’d probably buy a differentd brand.

I ordered one of these holsters for my GP100 in Feb 2012. It has been TEN MONTHS and still no holster! They have not responded to my last three attempts to communicate with them by telephone and email. VERY disappointed in the poor communication and customer service. I am feeling like they have STOLEN my $85.00
I have a Raging Bull Casull 5 inch revolver. Can I use the Scoped version holster…when I do not have a scope mounted on the pistol???

I have both the Horn hunter mainbeam & the XL, and absolutely love both packs. On the mainbeam pack, I use it for 3 day bivouac hunts and put a full platypus bladder in each side mesh pocket then secure the load straps. This not only gives you alot more room inside the pack, it stabilizes the pack perfectly. I have never had a single problem with either pack. Very lucky this year, killed a Wyoming antelope and a very nice Wyoming bull elk, then drove to Arizona and killed a great bull there as well. These two packs carried out the boned out elk without any problems. Thank you for making a quality USA product. The packs also hold my bow in place nicely when I have a long hike to hump.
Great all-arounder. Perfect for bringing in a heavy load to camp and packing out a couple of quarters. A little bit heavy for short 1/2 day trips from camp. Rifle scabbard provides access to gun while hiking. Not super quick access, but well within functional. Would not replace for overnight trips, but I must confess that I did by the smaller GunRunner for shorter day trips.
Eberlestock packs with the accessible Gun Scabbard are a great investment in functionality and safety. I spend a lot of time hiking up the side of steep inclines with loose rocks and having all four points contacting the ground is essential. It is nice to not have to worry about dropping the gun for the safety of others and yourself (and the safety of the gun).

The eberlestock website says this pack is 2000ci, which I was hoping was without the scabbard. Is that correct?
yes 2000 without the scabbard, but it is a TIGHT 2000. there are lots of divders and pockets inside. Great for tactical purposes.

I love to read reviews on products I am interested in and I find yours helpfull. But on some products I would like to see dimentions of the holding/cary capacity, like the Alaskin guide bino case. I have the Vortex Viper 15X56 binoculars and they do not fit in many bino cases. So for future reviews could you please include this vital information? I think this case is exactly what I am looking for! I bow hunt the southern desert area of Arizona, spot and stalk. So everything I need must be strategically placed for the long haul! Thanks! Good review, my findings are similar to yours.
I have two pre 64s in 30-06 as well, and a new Weather Extreme M70 in 30-06 with a 22 inch barrel. The new one is very accurate and I am taking it on a sheep hunt this coming August as I don’t want to risk get the old ones beat up on rocks or soaked for days on end if we have bad weather. The recoil pad on the new one allows me to shoot more at the range and I really like it.
However, the balance of the pre 64s is better. Maybe it’s the 24 inch barrel that does it. In the offhand shooting position I can hold the pre 64 steadier. it seems.

Thanks for the review it was good but you didn’t mention anything about where you would or if one could load game meat in this pack. Where would I put all my gear if I had to haul out game meat and I’m 5 miles from camp?
Thanks for the comment. I also pack in for 3-5 days with a 50-60 pound pack. This allows me to take my gear, and parts of the animal out on the first trip.
It is rare that you can pack all the way in, and get an animal out in 1 load, unless you have more than 1 person with you and only get 1 animal.
Elk, now way to get out in 1 load.
I take in game bags, put the meat in them and then stuff in the pack. I then move lots of gear to the outside of my pack. I have done this MANY times.

I have just come out of the bush in New Zealand and both my Mate and I had boot failures. Mine were not expensive ones, but I still thought they were good enough for the job, my mates were expensive and ended worse off than mine!
There is one thing 100% guaranteed when hunting in most places in New Zealand, your boots will get wet, it is nearly impossible not to at least cross a river. So generally your boots get wet at the beginning of a hunt and remain wet for the rest of the trip. Will these boots hold up to this sort of treatment?

I like the 2200. I have used it a lot, It has been a ok pack. I have had to get the zippers and a couple buckles replaced, today is the fourth time. It get costly to ship the pack to them, then have to pay them to ship it back. I will not buy another one.
Good review. I like my turbo. I shot a lot of bows out there, and this is the one I decided on. Yes it is expensive, but so are the other two I really liked. I figure this is the last bow I will buy for a while, so I went all out.I have already taken a turkey with it, and look to get an elk, and maybe a deer this year. Keep up the good reviews.

Here is an update from my posting. I was able to take a nice bull on a wounded warrior hunt through Idaho “N” Heroes outdoors. Even though my shot was not the greatest, my elk only went 160 yards before it laid down for the last time. I shoot about 5 days a week, and have not had a problem yet with this bow. I did not like the handle that came with it, I prefer a thin handle, so I took off the wooden one, and wrapped the handle with racket ball hand grip tape. Hoyt has made a great product.
Nice overall review. Don’t know if they could get the weight down- they’re using thermal conversion tech to do the charging (Peltiers…)
It should be observed that solar panels don’t work very well in cloudy conditions, whereas this would just simply work if you’ve got fuel. I’d probably view it as six of one, half dozen of another in that regard- it has definite survival applications that would work out better than some of the other traditional backpacker gear solutions would.

Being a native from Homestead, but having been gone for twenty years, I was skeptical about using a guide. I knew that I made a good choice in the first thirty second s after meeting captain Lain Godwin. This was my daughters 18th birthday and she wanted to go fishing! Yes I said doughter. Captain Lain made it great! He asked what we wanted to fish for and put us on them! We caught fish the whole time, all his equipment was top notch, we did not have to do anything but fish. There were three women on the boat, two with limited fishing experience. Captain Lain was great, showed amazing patience, and made it a great trip for them as well. You would be hard pressed to find a a better guide or person to go fishing with!
Starting the bowhunting slam from alaska to Iowa for several big game animals, the shuttle T broadhead is the best performing broadhead that has been shot from my bow! I have tried several broadheads such as the muzzy and rage and none have come close to comparing to shuttle T broadheads, complete pass throughs from moose to bears to whitetails and very impressive cutting diameter to cause very easy blood trails and no loss of game, If i had three thumbs i would stick them straight up!!

Good stuff, I broke my left ankle, tried to dislocate my atlas and axis, broke 2 vertebra and 4 spinal processes as well as ripped my right bicep tendon and my labrum in 4 place in Afghanistan, due to an IED attack. I figured life would be a bit of a struggle bow hunting after that, and it was.
I have also learned the act of taking shorter steps while hiking, and abdominal work outs, along with proper stretching of my glutes, hamstrings, piriformis, and hip flexors help keep my pain level more manageable. I have also found out that if I do workouts targeting the muscles of my low back, I tend to get back spasms. I have narcotics that I can take, but mostly use NSAIDS and non aspirin pain reliever.
When I came back from Afghanistan, I had 2 surgeries to my arm and shoulder. I was not allowed to lift more than 1 lb with my right arm, so I developed a head harness to use to hunt with. I tried the bite tab, but it didn’t work for me, and I couldn’t use any part of my right arm. When you can only use one arm you have to use your head, so I did. ( Mom says it is about time.) All this to say, just because you are in pain, you might as well hurt out on the trail than hurt getting lazy at home.
ps. I got a nice 5 pt bull this year hiked almost 70 miles in 6 days, it was worth it.
Great review, you got my wheels turning. I was going to get the mini razor HD 11-33×50. It’s slightly lighter, but also has a small objective lense. Vortex has a killer guarantee. Have you ever delt with kowa customer care? Any pro/cons you can think of between the two?

Got one for Christmas (I picked it out) have been using it as a day pack to hike in to new bluegill spots to ice fish. Working well, holds a lot of gear, but just a word for everyone. It fell forward the other day and bumped the front of the radiant heater in the shanty. Immediately, meaning like 1-2 seconds max., it burst into flames. Barely had time to grab it and toss it outside in the snow. Thank goodness the door was open. Hard lesson and a destroyed pack, rubber handle gone as well a big hole and melted zipper. Clumsy on my part but I was really shocked at how flammable this thing was. Nice backpack but please beware.

I have been directed to your website whilst looking for a review on Crispi Kanada boots. When I found the video I was disappointed. Firstly I was surprised that it was a very short review and whilst I was aware that it was just an initial review I would have expected a trip of at least a good few kilometers taking in a variety of wet, dry, muddy, slippy etc etc. The second point I noticed was that your guy was wearing jeans and a leather jacket, hardly what you would expect from a day out on the hill.
Are you able to tell me if there is an updated review of the boots that you have done?
I was looking to buy a pair for my work, hard walking in Scotland but want to see the boots put through some proper action first. Can you help?

These boot have been from Alaska, to the Wind River, so the Escalante Desert. They are fantastic and have had zero failures.
The video was just to show the features. Believe me we have pounded these boots, and they hold up.

Does anyone have any info on Wacem Broadheads? Is the four blade a good option? Is there any downside to the four blade Wac’em vs their two blade? I understand that they are the best on the market, I’m just trying to find out what is the best model to shoot?

you cannot go wrong with the 3 or 4 blade.I have shot both and both performed very well.
Cliff, I just wrote a 1 year update on these. I know a lot of people claim to be rough on gear. I hike in a lot of very steep, rocky, nasty country off trail. They have finally taken a turn down hill. I have busted out the stitches and foot bed. They weren’t designed for this type of abuse and held up well the first year but that’s it. For more traditional type hiking they would be great and last much longer.
I had a pair of the Kenetrek Mountain Extreme noninsulated boots and had a serious problem with them leaking. I cleaned the boots and when I was taking out my insoles i notice a HUGE hole in the heal where my foot had rubbed a hole all the way to the plastic. This surprised me as they had really only been used on a few hunts and had maybe 100 miles or so. I sent the boots to the company and after a week called to make sure they received them. I was told they would call me back. After another week of not hearing anything I called again and was told I was not in the system. They then had to go find my boots. They told me they had called me and e-mailed me and that they were going to offer me a new pair at the discounted price of $300. This floored me! Why the hell would i spend another $300 on a pair of boots that i already spent $400 on and they failed me???!!! I said as much. I was told the tech would call me back and explain. After checking both my email and my voicemail i found that neither had messages from Kenetrek. I called back and told them i had not received anything from them. Obviously, I had not know about it or why would i call to inquire about the boots if i had gotten a message? The person on the phone said they had to review the boots and they would call me back. a short time later i got a call and was told that they would be sending me a new pair and that after review they could see that the boots where not overly worn and that it was not a normal wear issue.
It is great that they are going to send me a new pair of boots and i am thankful but i feel like i should not have had to fight so hard to make that happen. Had i not said anything they would have been fine with letting me spend another $300.
will say this of the boots though, they preform very well in rough terrain. No rolled ankle or sore feet from me. Not ever! The only issue i had was some heal slippage and a few blisters before i broke my feet in. I say feel because I don’t think you can go from shoes and sandals on flat ground to boots and hills without expecting your feet to have a toughing up period. The waterproofing ultimately failed me and a thunderstorm wetted the grass enough that my 8 mile hike was soon very unpleasant as my feet quickly became soaked. Yes, i was wearing a synthetic/wool blend lightweight sock so it was not a sock issue. I use Lorpen socks every time i put on my boots.
Kenetrek boots are comfortable and stable that i can say without a doubt. My boots held water out about as good as a pair of flip flops though. The customer service was shaky at first but in the end they made things right with me. If they fix the leakage issue i would say they are worth the money for sure.
This pack clearly well made with a great attention to detail. Yet, it is very heavy and small in volume considering the weight. I suspect were the frame made of lighter contemporary material, strength would be preserved and weight reduced.
I have both the 2200 and the super day pack and love them both. I bought them for elk hunting and intended on using the super day for my shorter hunts but ended up using the 2200 more. The main reason is that it is capable of packing out heavy loads. When your way the heck back in and you don’t want to have to make more trips that necessary this pack is great. My feeling was that if I shot a bull I didn’t want to have to walk out to get my pack to talk back in and so on.
It is a comfortable pack and the access zipper in the back rest is great when you don’t want to take off the pack. I do think that the pocket situation is a little skimpy but I got over it. Unfortunately, my Nikon spotting scope does not fit in the flap compartment that is intended for such use. That does not make it any less of a great idea or feature though. Something small like a Vortex Razor HD would most likely fit.
It really showed it’s worth when I shot my bull and loaded it u. Even weight distribution and solid feel. It handles a hide quarter just fine. I later used it to help pack out a mule deer and put two hind quarters and back straps on with much the same results.
I really like it you guys did a great write up and I share your 5 star rating.
I love mine. It has served me well. Had an issue with the outside wearing thin and the magnet popping out. Sent it in to Badlands and got a new one the next week. For me this is the best system on the market. Not usre why the huge price jump though I bought mine for around $60 and see they are now about $120.
This gun goes bang! end of story. I sold my SBE 2 as it just became a dust collector. The SX3 is top of the line in my book. Nothing else can be said.
They do have a long range version of the pack. The frame and harness are the important parts to me. I’ve been using a Bull pack for elk hunting and considering the optics pack recently. Great review sir, and lately I have put my sleeping bag in a dry bag compression sack and strapping it to the top of all my packs which frees up quite a lot of room in my pack. Thanks again.

I own bad lands ,eberlestock the reason I bought eberlestock is the rifle scabbard I hunt with both. The 7000 seams like a good day scout never know what might pop up hunting pack the frame is calling out my name it would be nice if they would make a pack with a rifle carrying system a detachable duffle and a area for a spotting scope with tripod I do like the expansiveness of the eberlestock and the hands on of the badlands I have been looking for that one pack for all situation’s I have not found it yet
I would like to know how these boots fare around cactus. I’m in New Mexico and really don’t use any nylon type boot because of past problems with a cactus needle going through a boot at 9500 ft with the winds whipping and it being around 20 degrees. Please let me know if you can.
I also purchased a brand new USRA, Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in 300 Winchester Mag. This is not the WSM, but rather the full length cartridge. In looking at all the reviews online and after careful consideration I chose the Winchester. I am 46 years of age, former military,”Army”, and I have actively hunted my entire life. After 7, 6 hour trips to the range, Doing it right, using a proper fitting bore quide, starting with a clean cold barrel, firing no more that 3 shots, then letting it cool completely to the touch and properly cleaning, and repeat the process. I have used more than 140 rounds, 6 brands of ammo, more than 6 bullet types and 3 different weights. I have come to the conclusion that the new modern Winchester is the worst rifle I have ever owned. I mounted a New Leupold VX-1 4x12x40 with new Leupold dual dovetail mounts, low rings. The best groups I have been able to get from a Caldwell rest are– THE BROAD SIDE OF A LARGE BARN–. I have done everything most would checking and double checking scope screws and the 2 frame screws. Everything is good and tight, the scope moves as it should when it should and locks into slot. I don’t know if this is just a bad barrel or just a bad rifle all together,r but I will never make this expensive mistake again. In all farness to Olin Chem, I am going to Call Winchester customer service and I am returning this rifle to Winchester and hope to get me a new one or have them replace the barrel, if they refuse, I will probably have them keep and destroy it as it would be unsafe, irresponsible, and unethical for me to sell it or give it away., It’s that bad. I will be happy to come back later to this sight and report on how Winchester has handled the issue with the rifle. There are no points for looks, ergonomics or functionality if it has no accuracy, everything else does not matter. As is, I know I will NOT be taking this rifle hunting. I aim to kill Deer, Elk and Bear, not campers a 1/2 mile away.

I am aware that even with the best R&D team and quality control a bad apple can get in a box, I guess only time will tell.
I own several Winchester Model 70s. I also own 2 Great Remington Model 700s. And a Ruger Hawkeye. The Super Grade WInchester Model 70s are awesome and a great value. They are also very accurate. Wish they would reintroduce deluxe model 70 Featherweight as I think the current one although nice is not in the same league as the Super Grades. And I mean in relation to value per dollar spent. The cure for the POPULAR Featherweight is a SUPER GRADE version!!

Bought a pair of Zamberlan Elk model boots at Garners Sporting Goods in Pendleton Oregon last fall….first day in wilderness I pulled out 2 lace hooks…retied and kept hunting. 2 weeks later I couldn’t get assistance to replace the boots and was left hanging to get them repaired. I learned that I need to buy from a “big box store” who stands behind their products and to buy other boots!

I spoke to a customer service person at Outdoorsmans last week about the pack I recently purchased – True Timber – Outdoorsmans Hunter\Optics Hunter Pack System . We discussed some problems I noted with the pack waist belt sewing that had ripped. The rep and I discussed the belt with the pack in front of me. He described two plastic tabs with straps attached to the belt that were not in slots on the frame and I believe it was set up that way when I received it. I thought they were to attach extra gear but he said it was extra support for the waist belt. Perhaps that was the cause of the sewing failure. He advised that I return the waist belt and Outdoorsmans would replace it. The company refused to send a shipping label or pay for the costs of shipping it to them (almost $10) despite the fact it could be a product failure. They did agree to ship the replacement part at their expense.
Here is the rest of my critique of the pack. It is a good pack with lots of room for the extended hunting trip we were on into the Rockies. It had convenient access and room for everything I needed for the hunt. Everyone who saw the pack liked it. I did not have a spotting scope but I can see how the pockets make carrying that gear convenient. Those pockets offered more room for other gear and helped organize items.
I thought the bow cam sack/rifle stock sack at the bottom rear was inadequate for my bow, especially for a parallel limb bow. Despite the rep’s insistence that it was adequate I still think it is not. I went back and looked at some videos on YouTube illustrating the use of the pack and maybe I was doing something wrong in packing on my bow – maybe not because it is unclear how a bow was attached using the sack/bucket.
I hate the velcro used to close the flap on the bottomand prefer a snap on this feature like the ones used to secure the other pockets/compartments. With that I think the flap would then secure the lower limb of my bow and prevent the bow from settling down on the pack. I cinched the bow on tight with the compression straps. In the end I really did not have a problem even without the sack/bucket, except getting the bow off required removal of three snaps and straps. I just thought Outdoorsman might re-think the use of that flap for some bowhunters as it would be a nice feature to snap it up with shorter bow risers/parallel limb bows.
The zippers in the top flap were difficult to pull open when the zipper pull was pulled to either full close or open positions as the zipper threads tended to bunch up in the corners, especially with gear in the pockets. The zipper system looks sturdy enough but the colder my hands became the harder it was to open/close them. The smiley zipper located at the bottom of the pack and the pocket on the back worked just fine.
Shoulder and waist belt straps/cinches seemed to slide (loosen) when wet requiring frequent tightening for the most comfortable pack fit. Maybe it was just me or my sweat, but it was bothersome, especially when tired or climbing in a tight spot. The rep suggested using the strap/cinch clips. One of the small ones fell off before my trip so I was cognizant about that during the hunt. Also, once the excess waist cinch straps were in the clips it was more onerous to re-tighten them when they loosened anyway.
I thought the Outdoorsmans pack rain cover/fly was just too small. With the pack fully loaded it did fit circumferentially, but was a pain getting it over the pack and did not extend to the frame on the sides with gear on the back. It might be fine for a pack without attachments onto the outside of the frame. A fellow hunter had purchased one from another manufacturer that was plenty big for his pack and appeared much easier to put over his the pack when the rain storms came up suddenly.
Again maybe its me, but while I appreciated the quality of the water bladder itself, I did not like the Eberlestock mouthpiece on my bladder I purchased through Outdoorsmans. It did not look like anything on the instructions that came with it. It did not take me very long to put a hole in the spongy covering on the mouthpiece, which caused it to leak. I replaced it with a Camelback mouthpiece.
And if it the water tube was to go through the hole in the sleeve for the bladder – and I thought that was what it was for – it did not fit through the grommet. Maybe that was not what the sleeve was for – nor the grommet. Anyway it made it difficult to fill the Eberlestock bladder and so I also jerry-rigged a Camelback snap that allowed me to remove the mouthpiece and attach my water filter pump directly to the hose to fill the pack without removing it from the pack.
Like the above review, I wished there was a tie-down for the tube on the shoulder strap and so jerry-rigged a fix simple enough. Its a detail.
Finally our group used a variety of packs, some issued to Marine Recon units, Kuiu, and Tensing. This was the only one with an external frame. I like the frame and what it can do for many reasons. I found it just hard to sit with the pack on on a slope or incline for the moments you need to catch your breath on a steep climb, without loosening the shoulder and waist straps due to the bottom shelf of the frame itself. Everything has a trade-off perhaps.
Lastly, I talked to two people at Outdoorsmans about the waist belt, neither were very friendly and were mostly defensive, gruff and condescending. Perhaps it is an image they like – good ole boys who don’t put up with a lot of _ _ _ _ . My .02 is they need to improve on customer relations. There are a lot of good packs out there, Like someone once told me, don’t beat yourself up re-inventing the wheel, just copy the good stuff. Next year another company will incorporate Outdoorsmans’ good ideas in a different pack with a better price and friendlier service. Then I would buy my pack from them and not Outdoorsmans.
I will continue to use the pack and make these comments in an effort to suggest improvements to their system. and service I certainly appreciate the new waist belt.

Also sound like you don’t belong on the mountain. You might be best suit back east and just sit in a tree stand all day! I was wondering how the scent control is on the KUIU Tiburon as compared to the First Lite Merino Wool? Also How do they compare for temperature control in hot weather? I hunt bow Elk and Deer season in Oregon, and it is often 90 degrees or more.

A for scent control they are the same. Merino wool just does not stink after wear.
I would go with the light weight version of these shirts for that kind of heat. They breathe well and seem cooler than cotton. I wear 185 weight in the heat.

I know it doesn’t zip, but have you tried the 125 LS crew T vs the 145 Zip T? No pockets, just wondering if it would be any cooler? Usually really hot during Bow Elk Season here in Oregon!

Beware.. My Chugach rain pants ripped during their first hunting trip, the 4th day of a 10 day horse back grizzly hunt in BC. Kuiu would no provide a refund or credit against an updrade to the Yukon pants which they claim is more durable.
Very good quality and design- just MUCH TOO SMALL ! About 50% bigger overall would make it much more functional for kneeling /glassing.
I love these socks. They fit so well and never slide down. They keep your feet warm and dry. However, there is a flaw in the reinforced heel. On the underside near the arch of your foot they wear badly and pull apart. Eventually a hole appears. I have tried to mend them, but the mended area is irritating to walk on. They need to put as much material on the heel reinforcement as they do on the top of the sock. I hope this is corrected as I want to continue to buy them.

I have been a hunter, camper, hiker ect for 30 plus years. I am a retired Sheriff’s Deputy. I have spent literally thousands of mins and hours in light to heavy boots. Along with all the miles in hunting boots. My point is the shoes/boots. Are only as good as the socks that separate foot from boot. These socks are perfect, indoors or outside. I could say more, but I’ve already took up enough time. All is good, except the same problem as stated above. The heel area is not reinforced enough toward the toes or the area covering the heel area. Thanks….
Well I am a guide in Alaska and have been in the bush for 30 days straight on moose hunts and the ox has surpassed my expectations one thing that I need is a pack that will handle everything I can and keep going and it has and I have no reservations about throwing 150 lbs of meat in it and packing it a mile back because I trust it and with the lifetime unconditional warranty it’s a no brainer
I have packed out 3 elk now with this pack and agree with Randy 100%. Awesome pack, very durable (dragged behind ATV on rocky trail with minor cosmetic damage) accident, rides great even with a rear and front elk quarter, very well thought out pockets. Only issue is every once in awhile I get a small squeaking noise from the load lifter straps.
I would like to purchase 4 Solo Guncases. I see they are 48″ long. I will be using for rifles that are shorter. Firstly do they make a shorter case? Where can I purchase them?

I have Fibromyalgia. I cannot walk or stand on hard surfaces without widespread disabling pain. These insoles are awesome (and I’ve tried them all)! I’ve ordered a second pair to have when I throw the first pair in the washer.

So I have plenty of questions as I begin to foray into the world of back country hunting. I am really having a hard time choosing a pack. I have been looking at a HUGE variety of packs mainly from the KUIU and Badlands. I am slowly collecting the ultra light gear needed to do a 5 – 7 day Elk hunt. The hardest part is choosing what kind of C.I. bag I need. I would be doing an archery hunt complete with my own tent, pad, sleeping bag, spotting scope, binoculars, bow, and gear.
Any suggestions for a first time flat lander from Wisconsin?

I’d stay clear of this rain suit. My first disappointment was the sizing. I was convinced by a sales rep that their sizing chart was accurate and that the rain gear was oversized and designed to function as an outer layer. I am 6’0 205 and ordered an extra large. It arrived in a skimpy bag, was very thin and light, and fit as snug as a pair of jeans when placed over a single pair of fall hunting pants. The very first time I wore them out, I hiked into the woods through a thicket and climbed into my tree stand in the rain. By the time it got light, I noticed 4 small rips in the pant leg from contact with brush. When I called customer service the next day, I was brushed off and was told to send pictures and a letter of explanation to their service department and that they did not refund or replace over the phone. No refund was ever issued. These pants may be lightweight and stretch in multiple directions, but they are thin, cheap and cannot compare to Sitka rain gear. Don’t waste your $.

I have bought several pairs. I liked mine so gave for x-mas. Most did not like them. Have has a few go flat. Was suppose to have warranty. But how many times could one pay for shipping cuz they keep busting.

I used this on a backcountry sheep hunt to power what we needed in our camp. (Electronics, DSLR cameras, coolers, etc.) I haven’t seen a more durable and dependable solar pack. And it was so lightweight going up and down the mountain. One of the best features in my mind! Blows Goal Zero out of the water. Never going back.

I have had my AM-15 since December 2014, shot about 300 rounds and cleaned it once, just because I was cleaning everything else I shot that day. This is my first AR, so I am not an expert, but this rifle operated flawlessly and had very little residue to be removed. Compared to everything else I shot that day, you would have thought not more than a couple rounds were fired. This thing is remarkable. I can’t believe the military is not investigating the RF85 treatment. Seems to me that it would be huge advantage to have a reliable weapon that has no lube for the crude to stick too. Great review. Keep up the good work.

I have several clothing items from KUIU and have found that I always prefer to order one size larger. I have been more than pleased with all the items purchased primarilly for Ohio bow hunting. I have bought into the layering concept and my friends think I’m crazy for spending the money I do at KUIU for quality clothing but I get cold easily and I believe KUIU has created great products that have kept me warm and dry thus earning every penny spent. I also hate to feel “bogged down” by heavy clothing and like the more athletic feel provided. I have mid layer, insulating and rain gear as well as a icon 5200 backpack. I normally don’t spend the time on product reviews but feel kudos are warranted to KUIU. thanks

I HATE hauling more than 50.
You could easily stuff 100 pounds in this pack and it would be as comfortable as any pack out there.

Just letting you know, Kuiu has a bow carrier and gun sling available for this bag. Both work great and allows you to remove your weapon while keeping your pack on your back.
Jaret is the man. I just tested out the Large with my Leica HD-B and the pack felt great even with a heavy pack on. Hands down the best bino holder on the market.
What is the fit like? Narrow last? I’m an E in width (size 8.5 mens), so I’m always cautious with European brands as they tend to run narrow.

Randy: Your review is spot on. I own several pair of every one of the Kuiu pants and wear them as my every day pants as well as the tiburon pants to the gym every day to work out. I think that if someone is just going to own one pair of Kuiu pants then the alpine pants are the way to go. For 90 degree + weather the tiburon have the edge, but they do get tears in heavy brush, I don’t get that with the alpine or the attack pant. The alpine pant gets a+ from me.

As someone who is no an avid bow hunter, and is not as familiar with the best equipment, I found this article to be very informative on what to look for in a new bow. Including all the advance technology that this bow contains and what benefits that technology provides.

I bought a pair of mountain extreme and wore for 2 seasons and really liked the boot. The heal on one started coming off the boot so instead of just putting some shoe glue inthe heal I sent the boots Iin for repair. 2 months later I received the boots back unprepared and one boot was missing the sole completely. These boots were fine and would have lasted me at least one more season if I had not sent them in for repair. I called kenetrek and spoke with Jim and he said the boots were unrepairable. I am very very disappointed with kenetrek for ruining my boots. In my opinion the sole coming off should have been a warranty issue and theyshould replace them if they cannot fix them. Don’t send them back to the customer in worse condition. Kenetrek has lost this customer over 1 pair of defective boots.
This bow is simply amazing. People complain about vibration and recoil but I’m not too certain those people know what their talking about. Mine came with the rak package as well but as any other archery enthusiast it that wasn’t good enough for me. I threw on a 7 pin iq sight and a rip cord drop away rest. Never have I been able to shoot so consistently. Never have I been able to shoot comfortably at 60+ yards, that is no longer true. I took a deer at nearly 50 yards last year without even thinking twice about taking the shot. As far as the wall, I love it. There is no play in it whatsoever. If you like shooting off the wall this bow is for you. But it’s not like it wants to jump out of your hand either, it’s just simply perfect. Then you’ll have the group of guys who say that thing feels cheap like a toy. It’s not because it’s cheap, it’s because of the carbon compound it’s made out of. It’s supposed to feel light. As far as price goes they’re practically giving this thing away. Hoyt carbon bows are at least double the price, and trust me when I say this, this feels nothing like a hour or Mathews. And I say that in a good way. Go pick one up and try it for yourself. You will not be disappointed. Refuse to follow.

These are horrible. A complete waste of money. No refunds, but you don’t know that until after you have blisters, although at the trade show I purchased them at, I was told there are. Pathetic . I have blisters between my toes and foot pads after wearing for 30 mins. Do not purchase these!
First of all, very helpful review. But I’m torn between these and the Asolo 535s. I’m doing a 2 week trip to the yukon next summer and need something that won’t fall apart 100 miles from nowhere. I’m leaning toward these and was wondering about sizing. I’m usually a size nine, but wear 9.5 sambas with a comfortable amount of wiggle room. Any recomendations?

How does it protects your bow ?
Hey! So new to this website, and new to the gun industry. Love the build that you did with the Anderson upper. I just bought my lower from them not to long again and was extremely curious about the rails on the free floating barrel. I see that you have the stock picatinny rails, is it easy to instal and uninstall those on that rail system? Haven’t seen much review about the stock rails and how hard it is to take off the Delta ring. Was thinking about getting a different rail for the barrel but if it is easy to add some other picatinny rails and accessories on the rail I might just keep it. Let me know! Please shoot me an email and fill me in on the details. Looking to purchase the upper within the month.

I bought the 145 zip baselayer and used it in August on the Continental Divide Trail in Colorado. Sometimes above 12,000′. The nights were cool and early mornings usually had frost….brrrr!
I liked the talk-up about how the nuyarn sewing style makes it superior to most other merino wool base layers.
Well, from a technical point, I would say it isn’t noticeably any warmer, nor wicks any better, than quality merino baselayers for half the price. I’m glad I had it on, but could have saved the money and used my older baselayer quarter zip. And, I noticed a bit of itchiness, something the company says nuyarn doesn’t have. At least for me, I felt it to be a tad rougher than the Icebreaker baselayer I have.
So, for me, it wasn’t worth the price. IMHO, the nuyarn is a marketing ploy to justify a high price for a product not in any way superior to comparable weight merino wool baselayers. Better than synthetics, certainly, but that’s all I would give it.
I purchased an Anderson lower from a local gun shop. I didn’t really know much about the company but it looked good and was reasonably priced. Now I am in search of the upper to complete the build. My question is, was the model you reviewed a carbine length or midlength gas system? Do you think it would have made any difference in the outcome of the testing that you did or your satisfaction with the rifle?
excellent rain gear, because of its very light weight i carry this gear with me more than any other. i live in wyoming where we do not get a lot of rain, but i always like to be prepared. i do not use it a lot but when it is needed it is essential. it works great. well worth it.

I have this pack put a mule deer buck (deboned) with the head, and my gear about 75LBS, maybe a little more. Packed it about a mile and a half, I thought it carried the load quite well. No back pain no shoulder pain. Great pack for the money!
Thanks for the review! I’m looking for a good LED flashlight for my upcoming camping trip. I agree that those flashlights can be expensive but I think they are more dependable and usually have brighter light than cheap traditional flashlights.
I Ordered so Kuiu Gear in December of 2015 and I don’t have enough good things to say. ordering the gear was easy. It shipped in a very reasonable amount of time and the gear is no joke! I just wore the Teton down jacket in sub 0 weather with wind and I was perfectly warm. I did do a exchange for some better fitting clothes (my fault) and customer service was amazing. I talked to Cody in customer service who was awesome.
Rangefinder binocular combination currently require “detuned” glass. The range finder does not get the return signal through the lens coatings. It’s a balancing act. The current HD plus glass shows how good Leica glass can be. But it wont work with the range finder feature.
I first of all would like to applaud the guys at Kuiu for bringing some less expensive alternatives to the table as far as long distance, ultralight weight hunting and traveling packs go. I have nothing but the best to say about their weight, materials, and craftsmanship regarding layout.
My one major issue is with the frame. I’m referring to the 2015 version of the frame, which is when i bought my pack.
The lightweight carbon frame supports loads well, is comfortable, and is sleek enough to feel invisible on your back, however there is one major downfall – one which i believe is the most important when determining a packs usability for long distance hunts – the NOISE factor. The Carbon Fiber Frame for my 2015 icon pro MAKES NOISE!
I don’t mean it that it shuffles and i can hear the cordura material rubbing together, and Im not talking about my stuff shuffling inside the pack – these are all but non-existent compared to the squeaking and creaking that this pack makes. This is an issue with the shoulder strap connection points and the upper attachment points of the backpack to the frame, and when i say it squeaks, i mean that every single step i take turns into a squeak or a creak in the backpack – so much so that it makes it difficult to hear things around me and has the ability to spook prey.
I have contacted kuiu about this issue and they remain silent. I have scoured the internet for ways to deaden the problem, everything from duct tape to graphite powder, graphite oil, mixtures of the two…nothing fixes this issue.
I hiked 80+ miles with my pack last summer, including a 30 mile, 50lb trek deep into the olympic peninsula wilderness (WA based) with my kuiu and my only complaint is the frame noise – however i never realized until now how much of an intolerable burden this would be.
I should mention that my fiancé has the same pack and doesn’t seem to be bothered as much by the frame noise as i am, but this is my solution…
I have a daypack that i use and love, made by Nimrod (WA Based pack design company) and they have an external frame that has wonderous capabilities when it comes to attachment and design. simply made out of aircraft aluminum, i attach my kuiu pack to their frame and off i go, no noise, no issues. I consider this the best of both worlds, although i cannot use kuiu’s hip belt with the Nimrod frame, I am content to be rid of the frame noise.
Other than that, its a great bag, and I’m happy with my purchase.

Great pack review! I have the 1850 with the same suspension, and love it. Kuiu makes some great stuff… their bino harness is the best I’ve used (and I’ve used a few others), their Tiburon line is fantastic for warm weather hunts, especially if you’re doing any hiking. Great stuff.

I was having the same problem with squeaking on my Icon Pro 1850 after about 2 years of use (which really amounts to about 30 – 40 days in the field). I tracked down the source of the squeak to two primary areas- the slots where the webbing goes through the upper load-lifters riser slots, and where the lower end of the frame sits inside the pocket of the hip belt. I am able to produce other small squeaks and noises from the buckles, webbing connections, etc. but the offensive squeaking is coming from the two areas mentioned first.
This squeak was eliminated on my pack by using some 1/2″ wide ultra high molecular weight tape (UHMW tape) that I had previously purchased on Amazon, some old wood-wood drawer glides. I cut about 2″ pieces and stuck them through the slots where the straps goes through the load lifters. I also ran the UHMW tape along all the contact surfaces of the frame, that sit inside the hip-belt pocket. I have yet to take it out for a real hunt, but in my trial use, it is back to being silent.
First, let me say that in my pack, the load-lifter squeak could be 90% rectified by adjusting the straps to move the buckle away from the frame. For some reason on my pack there are two straps and two buckles between the shoulder strap (through the frame slot) to the pack, and it was the doubled-over sewn end of the straps that were rubbing on the frame slots and singing like a crickets in my ears with ever step. That carbon fiber frame has some remarkable acoustic properties!
I know the UHMW tape fixed mine, but I’m not sure what else could be done about the bottom pocket squeak. Perhaps the end of the frame could be sanded, buffed and polished very smooth, and waxed with some automotive wax? Maybe using some of the fuzzy side of adhesive velcro to cover the contact areas would do it? Maybe just cut a few layers of a plastic trash bag to cover the frame where it goes into the hip belt pocket? Or maybe just take it apart and wash it real well.
Anyhow, it’s a great pack and definitely worth seeking a solution if your pack ends up with a squeak.

The light works great if you are using it as a hand held but if you put it on a weapon mine did not work very well. The light would shine but every time I pulled the trigger the light would flash and part of the time would cut off completely. As for the customer service it is laughable. I’ve been talking on the phone and emailing since December and still do not have my light back in my hands. I had to ship it to China and then it was delayed and the company said it would not be moving forward until after Feb 20 because of Chinese new year. I like the light as a handheld, the distance it shines is awesome but as for a light to put on a ar 15 or any other weapon it is clearly not capable. I just wanted to let anyone looking at purchasing one of these to try and find one to play with before you buy, you may find something better for a weapon light.

It is not a Hilleberg, but close. You cannot go wrong with the Enan! But this is also a good option.

The Rampage XT is my first Hoyt I have owned. I can say without a doubt that Hoyt has gained a lifelong customer from this bow. IMHO the best bow I could buy for the money 🙂
Can you tell me how noisy these pants are? I just received my pair of Teton Stretch Woven pants and they were noisy! I’m an archery hunter that enjoys silent stalking. I can’t stand even the slightest of “swishing” sounds from the pant legs rubbing together. I’m definitely returning the Tetons and I’m leaning towards ordering the Tiburons instead. Any input on noise level would be great – especially if you can comment about the comparison between the Tetons and Tiburons. I know I can return them if I don’t like them, but I don’t enjoy paying for shipping to and fro… Thanks in advance.

not really, i would go with a vortex, or leupold for that same price and you would have a better bino
“STORM WORTHY”….!!!!….This Kuiu tent is a one season tent!!! Summer… and you better hope the wind does not blow any sand or rain around (ie horizontal like mountain storms do or the constant wind on an Alaskan beach)… Good quality and set up design is quick but the main tent is 75% mesh and the only thing that I can see it is storm worthy of is gnats and mosquitoes…..I will try their nes ” 4 seasons tent and hope for better results… Have a three man Hilliberg and it is outstanding!!! A little heavy for the trail but still maybe the finest tents in the world ….
Just received Tiburon gloves. I have always worn medium sized gloves in any brand, these are huge. The fingers are the right length but I can fit 2 of my hands in them, unfortunately, medium is the smallest they offer. Completely unusable, so loose. I guess these are only made for people with really fat hands and short fingers.
Shot the Ruger 9mm, love the trigger, sights and accuracy. Have carried a Glock 23 for 25 years on and off duty and would probably pick the Ruger over the Glock. I was really impressed with the Ruger. Just my opinion.

A great system – simple and works very well. My only suggestion is that a better alternative than split-rings is needed to attach the harness loops to the binoculars. I can’t bring myself to force split rings over my Zeiss bino loops and likely scratch and wear the loops. My solution so far is to use electrical cable ties to go from harness loops to the bino loops.
There is really no reason not to put fluoro on your baitcasting setups, the exception being topwater fishing, or heavy cover flipping. Just practice tying a good Palomar knot with no line crossing and you’re golden. I only use braid on spinning reels, with a fluoro leader when the water is clear.

Picked up one Feb. 2016 and have shot about 2,000 rounds thru it, no FTF or FTE. Love the gun, also have a Glock 19, Ruger is a bit heavier, but I rate it better. It is now my carry (ccw). The magazine rlse. is a bit better for me than the Glock. I am a lefty and like amdx. slide lock. Great gun from Ruger, and not as ugly as my 19 4gn.
I’ve been buying Danner Pronghorns for years although a great boot they don’t compare to Crispis. I bought a pair of insoles from you about 4 years ago. they literally killed my feet. I had to take then out of my shoes and go without any to get some relief. I would not recommend them to anybody.

You should never have Velcro on hunting gear. Outdoorsman stinks about everything I can’t wait to go to Phoenix and get my hands on one of these. Saw the prototype at the sheep show. This pack is amazing!!!

I’ve owned a Hatfield knife for about three years and I heartily argee with this review. I’ve been a hunter my whole life and this is the best knife I’ve ever used. I was kind of concerned about bring the edge back the first time I sharpened it but it was effortless with the EZ Lap diamond sharpener Mr. Hatfield suggested.
The Alpines do not have DWR. Mine don’t anyway. Was pretty disappointed when they soaked up water like a sponge.
Just a heads up to those that are contemplating purchasing these boots. They are a really nice boot for what they’re supposed to be used for. They fulfill a very specific need, and that is steep, off trail mountaineering. These are 100% not a trail boot. On trail the sole is very rigid with almost no flex so you’ll feel in each step what some call a robotic step. If you want a boot with more flex to feel or conform to what is beneath you (i.e. Rocks) these are definitely not the boot for you. With no give in the sole and you step on a rock sticking up into the trail, with out any give in the sole, your ankle has to give, sometimes throwing you off balance a bit. Think of strapping a piece of plywood to the bottom of your foot and going hiking – honest to god. Again, a quality boot but Kuiu and Randy need to keep in mind that most people will think they’re buying a really good boot that can be used as an all around hunting / hiking boot.
As the proud owner of multiple Yeti products, I can say that your review is spot on. Yeti and a handful of other makers have really revolutionized what a cooler is capable.
Of note on your longevity test… Yeti recommends “pre cooling” your cooler before using it for a long period. Basically, you should add ice the night before using it, then dump the ice before loading the cooler and adding new ice. Sounds silly if you live in the North, but here in Texas summer I’ve tested a “pre cooled” test side-by-side with one that wasn’t and it made more than a day of difference before my ice totally melted.

Ive been “breaking” this pack in for several miles. The pack itself is awesome!!! The waist belt…? While the shouldler straps get thinner..the belt doesnt seem to want to form.. Pack wants to keep sliding down..not past my hips….but far enough down that it puts pressure on my shoulders. It needs a belt that can be custom formed..or wear it till your shoulders bruise.
Just received a 10.5 upper from Anderson and have to return it first thing unfortunately. The free float hand guard is not aligned straight with barrel, off center. They’re sending a return label, etc., so it won’t cost me anything. Just a little disappointed I guess and hoping I made a good decision about now.

Very disappointed in the Danner boot. Been wearing Danner boots for 20 plus years. Recently purchased 2 different styles and am very disappointed in both the quality of the boot as well as the customer service. Have a pair of pronghorn and the the sole came unglued from the boot. I wear these boots maybe 3 time a year. Both Product made in China. Not even a American made boot anymore. Customer service was no help or even consider a resole. Danner company doesn’t care about the quality or the consumer anymore. Very sad and unhappy

Why do these reviews never have anything from the Pelican line up? From the features and construction of the Pelican line, they look superior to all here. Their latches and rigid carry handles appear to be stronger and lock better. I do like what I see from the Orion cooler here, but why is there no pic of the Jeep on top of the other coolers? I am mainly just tired of all the Yeti hype. They are functional, but there are plenty other choices out there. Yeti just seems to have the “cool factor” more so than the others.
We are looking into a review on the Pelican vs some other coolers. I do LOVE the Pelican.

Up here in Duluth, MN, the winters are cold and people wear wool socks on a daily basis. I love the Omni wool sock, but I can’t find them in size small for my wife. Do you make size small wool socks?
Sams and Costco both carry a womens wool sock that we quite like.
I have taken my Ignite 4k white water rafting on The Ocoee River (with the helmet attachment), snorkeling on several reefs in Palm Beach, FL including The Blue Heron Bridge at Phil Foster Park, and my son used it on his drone. We got great video and pictures. It was easy to use and came with every attachment we needed. Awesome!!

Awesome until you drop it and it gets a dent in it. At that point it is useless. A 3 dollar igloo from Walmart does a better job now! We loved it up to that point. A lot of money down the drain with one slip!

I have just disposed of my Eastman shooting stick, its the single stick version of the above with camo coating. After a few years the camo coating became so sticky (like glue) that the stick could not be extended without excessive force. Tried cleaning it with soap, white spirit..no good.

I also tried the AO Trail Pants blind, and instantly fell in love with them! I had never heard of them, and stumbled on them looking for some mid-weight convertible pants. I never found the convertibles after I found these.
I purchased mine from an outfitter/online discount retail store front, and before I could get out of the changing room, I knew I had to have them.
They wear awesome, and pack even better. They can be used on the trail, in the field, or a face to face customer meeting (before hitting the trail!)
I have worn them at least twice a week for 5 weeks now, there was no color run, or fade on the first wash or the 5th wash! They take up so little space in a pack, and wash w/ dark or light colors.
The snapped cuffs are great for keeping the warmth in on those cold morning hikes, and the zipper pockets I agree provide a piece of mind on the important things!
My only two complaints might be the velcro back pockets, and the undersized belt hoops. Eventually you are going to want to use another belt, and it can be a challenge to slip another through the hoops.
The reinforced knees and the gusset in the crotch & seat repel water, and do a great job of staying clean.
They fit well. wear well, and can’t wait to get back into the store for another pair.

This rifle does indeed seem flawless. My game really is spear fishing, but all outdoor sports interest me. When I was younger, much younger, I was a C.C.F cadet at school. The rifle range was one of my favourite places, and my aim was really good too. I am not sure how I would go on today, my eyesight is not what it used to be!

I’m looking for buy a really nice pair of hiking boots that will withstand abuse. I really like the Lowa Tibet, but they make the regular width in an E and my foot is a D. So now I’m weighing my options between the Lowa Ranger or Trekker versus the Crispi Nevada. How do the Lowa Ranger and Trekker compare to the Crispi Nevada? I don’t mind spending the extra money for the Crispi Nevada is they are a better boot.
Going to haveto look into this a bit more as the Crispi and the Lowa were tested by different people. I (Cory) test the Lowa boots and I do not think you can go wrong there. I know that most of the guys really like the Crispi boots though. Sorry I know that is not much help. Have you tried them on?
