My Story:
It’s 0130 in the morning and while you should be sleeping your ears are ringing and you are in a startled confusion. Your home security system is screaming that something is wrong and while it does contact the authorities for you the potential threat is already upon you. You need protection and you need it now. The problem is that your trusty safe is in the basement and because of your children you do not leave a loaded handgun in your dresser drawer. You are not defenseless and the threat is already upon you. This may have been the last mistake you ever made, but it doesn’t have to be.
My wife runs an in home childcare and because of this I am very obligated to make sure that my firearms are locked up and inaccessible to children. My safe is in my basement and far from my bedside so it is not practical for me to keep my personal protection in that area. I work in corrections and because of this we as a family live with the acceptance of a constant potential threat. Now, I would not call this a crippling fear but it is something to be taken seriously and because of this I have a security system and a bedside safe. This is where The Gun Box 2.0 comes into the picture.
While playing around on Facebook one day I noticed an ad for The Gun Box 2.0 and I thought that I would try it out. I contacted the company and arranged for a testing sample to be sent to my home. When the package arrived I was instantly impressed with how well made and aesthetically pleasing the box was. Sadly I was in the middle of some craziness involving selling my home and moving into my rental only to buy a new home and move again. Anyway, the point is that I was not really able to get this badboy set up and going.
Once you get this guy rolling there are so many ways to open it. You can use your phone app, finger print, key fob, or a credit card. The point is that while it is secure it is also very simple to open and get to your protection. The lighted lid illuminates your weapon in low light and the hydraulic arms make sure to open far enough to get what’s inside. The really important thing here is that this box keeps your weapon locked, safe, and inaccessible to children but is also very easily available to you when necessary.
The situation that I used to open this review is actually based on true events. A situation similar to this happened to me during the month of April 2018. It was 0130 and my home alarm sounded. My wife and I awoke and as I got my wits about me I knew that I needed to make sure my family was safe. Luckily this was during a period of time that I was actively using The GunBox and after my fingerprint was scanned my weapon was in hand and I was able to clear my home and make sure my children where safe. As it turns out the threat was a false alarm due to a sensitive alarm component but the fact remains that I was ready. I was in a position to protect my family if needed and it was because I had access to my handgun, a gun that in 99.99% of situations sits innocently concealed within my Gunbox. Because I have the ability to keep it secure at all times I am able to almost certainly eliminate the risk of it being discovered, misused, or tampered with. It is safe but is always ready if needed. This is peace-of-mind that I cannot put a price on.
In today’s world we are constantly bombarded with political views of pro or anti-gun views. I am not here to have that debate. The one thing that both sides of the isle can agree on is that guns should be secure at all times and inaccessible to children. The Gunbox 2.0 is the perfect way to insure that a home that decides to have a handgun is able to keep it secure, safe, and accessible when needed.
What can be done better?
I found that the fingerprint scanner has a tendency to be a bit finicky. I would like to see it have a bit more tweaking to insure a rapid read and open when a programmed print is placed upon the pad. Other than that I believe this to be one of the best non-fireproof handgun safes that I have ever used.
