My Story:
As a waterfowl hunter I have always been amazed at how well birds of this distinction can endure such intense cold. I know they are always looking for warmer temperatures and moving south to find food but the fact remains that waterfowl migration season is downright cold. So, how do those little guys stay so warm? Well, as I am sure you are aware they are covered in feathers. Below the larger exterior feathers is a light layer of extra fluffy down feathers. This is how the little buggers fight off even the most intense ice storms. If it’s good enough for them than it is good enough for me. Thank goodness Big Agnes feels the same way.
Big Agnes has been making quality down products for quite some time. The Hole In The Wall jacket is just one more addition to their already amazing product line. This jacket was expertly designed with outdoor enthusiasts in mind. When the weather gets rough this jacket stands tall ready to do battle. Proving to be a great lightweight choice for backcountry adventures, this jacket will also get you to and from the office. It is packable and water resistant.
Down is one of the most capable and fantastic fillers that has ever been stuffed into anything. Mother Nature got it right with this natural cold fighting filler. Down does have its flaws however, and its ability to repel water is sub-par at best. Luckily, BA uses 700 FP Downtek Water Repellent Down. This ensures that your jacket will keep you warm even in damp conditions.

Pair that with a water and wind resistant rip-stop nylon shell and you are set. BA knows the frustration of layering clothing and the pains of having to pull sleeves back down. To erase this problem BA added thumb holes to the jacket sleeves so it stays in place when pulling on an outer layer. The chest pocket doubles as a stuff sack for packing. Mesh pockets inside help with storage and two zippered external pockets give you a place to res your hands or store items. All this come at about 15 ounces.

I have used my Hole in The Wall jacket nearly every day since I got it and I have to say I love it. I did notice that the armpit area is a bit snug. It’s not that is inhibits movement, it just comes all the way up into the armpit and might cause some people some discomfort. Sizing up may eliminate this. As for the jackets ability to keep me warm, well, I am down with down! This jacket is a must have for any serious outdoorsman who is looking for a durable layering jacket or in light weather as a standalone. It is as fashionable as it is functional and has it place in town or on the trail.

What can be done better?
As I noted above the armpit area can be a bit snug. A little tweaking could be done or at least a small note indicating that might want to size up. The fabric, stitching, zippers, fill, and everything else seem to be at or above the industry standard. The price point seems to be on par with similar products from all manufactures. I really think this is a great coat. This BA jacket is BA. Fine Job guys!
