When most people think of a wok they think of Chinese food. When I think of a wok I think of tacos. I live in eastern Washington, and we have a very strong Hispanic culture here. I couldn’t tell you how many times I have been to the park or to a party where tacos were being prepared on some type of wok. Some of them are even made from old farming discs. I have long been interested in owning my own wok and I was delighted to stumble across a very nice-looking option at the Barebones booth at Outdoor Retailer this summer.
After talking with some of the booth staff we arrange for a sample of the Long Handle Wok to be sent to me for review. I loved how pretty the blue steel was and the extra long wood handle was really a nice touch. This is a handsome wok to be sure! When it arrived I was ecstatic as I had some big cookouts planed that I knew I would perfect to test this wok out, but before I could do that, I had to test it out at home.
The first thing to do was season the wok. This is simple enough, get it hot, season with oil or a product shown below, let it smoke off, and repeat a couple more times. Its a snap!
You will see in the picture above that the Wok must sit on a base, this is completely necessary and would spell disaster without it while cooking on a stove. The base can move a bit which I found annoying so I used some wire to fix it to the stove grate and solved the problem just like that.
Once it was seasoned, I knew exactly what I was going to cook, tacos!
After the home test I knew this was already going to be my new go-to taco pan. Now it was time to do something different. I was asked to do burgers for a big function at my Mom’s lake house. So, I agreed, and I decided I would make some caramelized onions to go with the burgers.
After that cookout I had another big cook to do for my daughter’s softball team. We were doing tacos for around 60 people, so we had to bring in all the tools. I had one very particular idea for the wok. I wanted to cook the El Pastor in the wok so I could save the juice and use it to fry the tortillas. The wok was perfect for this and it made for a very happy group of people.
After cooking several different meals with this wok I can safely say it is made its way into my “Forever Gear” which is to say, I will not be getting rid of this bad boy. If you are looking for a fun way to cook the food you love the Barebones Long Handle Wok should certainly be on your radar.
There are a couple things to be aware of such as the base issues I outlined above. Also, there will be discoloration in the wok once you use it. It’s normal, don’t stress. DO NOT attack this thing with soap and an SOS pad. You will ruin the coating and you will regret it. Treat it like cast iron and be nice to it! I have tons of cooks on this wok now and I only love it more each time I use it!

What can be done better?
The only thing that could be worked on would be the base. The wok is fantastic. I truly love this product and would recommend it to anyone that asks.
