My Story:

When I first spoke to Deuter it was for the purpose of working out a review of the great FOX 30 pack which I was interested in having my daughter test. While talking in the Deuter booth at the summer Outdoor Retailer show this pack kept catching my eye and when I left we had worked out the details for testing the pack I came to talk about and this great XV1 as well.

The XV1 pack arrived just in time for a quick trip to Seattle that I had planned. I used this pack as my overnight bag and I was very happy with how well it worked for a light weekend trip of couch surfing. It is just big enough to hold the essentials of travel.

The next testing ground was a bit more rugged. I volunteer at a youth camp during the summer and the days are full of adventure. I knew that I would get some great use out of the XV1 during activities and the long days at camp. The XV1 was a great companion on day hikes, boating adventures, fishing trips and just about everything else I could throw at it.

During the past 9 months I have used the XV1 for everything you might think of in regards to a small lightweight day pack. It has been to Pennsylvania, Colorado, Wyoming, Oregon and Idaho. I have had it stuffed with clothing, baseball gloves, fishing gear, laptops and so much more. The XV1 is a great pack for an active yet simplistic lifestyle. It does not have a ton of bells and whistles but it has functionality and comfort for days. I am not sure what else a person could want with a pack that falls into the category the XV1 is intended to live in.

The key features that I love are the stretch pouch on the outside of the pack as it is nice for shoes or even dirty laundry when traveling. It is also great for rain jacket when out adventuring. I love the straps and the Airstripes system which make this pack is insanely comfortable. The internal pocket is spacious and the smaller external pocket is great for toiletries or other small items. If I had a critique it would be that the zipper for this smaller pocket can be a bit awkward to get to under the lip of the stretch pouch.

The price point of $110 seems to be on par with most other high quality packs in this day and age. I do count myself as an old soul and though the sticker shock still gets me I have come to realize that you truly do get what you pay for. Deuter knows a thing or two about building high quality packs and they have not missed the mark with yet another great addition to their already impressive lineup of quality packs.

What can be done better?

Overall this is an amazing little pack that will do just about anything you need it to do within it’s intended limits. I do with the smaller external pocket zipper was a bit higher on the pack but that is a preference and not a performance issue. This pack functions as advertised and has been a very worth companion on some very awesome trips. I would never talk anyone out of purchasing this great pack!
